Showcase; Deimos Pattern Relic Predator Executioner, Thunderbolts Chapter of the Adeptus Astartes.

Hi All

Finished my new predator executioner and very pleased with it too. I've swapped to Vallejo foundation white instead of Citadel ceramite white, it's not as opaque but it flows better off the brush and along with a new thinners; Tamiya X-20A, it's much easier to use. The final result is less solid white and allows the Fenris grey base coat to show ever so slightly giving the white a very nice blueish tint. I likes it! works nicely with the ice blue spot colour.

some piccies...

With the transfers and iconography I've stayed with the V for my chapters "5th forging"; the equivalent of a codex company, the Thunderbolts use a more flexible organisation than the rigid codex system due to their long affiliation with the adeptus mechanicus based on the forge world they established their fortress monastery on. This affiliation has led to their predilection for vehicles and a larger than usual number of tech marines. The chapters organisation is largely formed around the many forges they maintain and it is a rare force of Thunderbolts that does not contain a tech marine and his mechanical charges.

Next up for the Thunderbolts will be a Typhon heavy siege tank but first I'll be concentrating on my newly delivered Deadzone 2 goodies in the shape of some plague reinforcements and a new industrial scenery set which will probably see action in future instalments of our narrative campaign; The Cypra Incident.

Hope you like the new tank, C & C as ever welcome.

Marine Reinforcements

After seeing Boss Bluddtoofs marine additions I felt I should also get mine up on the blog too.

here is Khan. i just need to do a base with a  bike on for him to go on, should (as he normally is) take Moondakkan

i got him before i got hold of the new marine codex and saw how great white scars are. good job i have all those bikes!!

next up is Kantor. a slight improvement in the new codex

i am always out on the hunt for a bargain

3 tactical squads
dev squad
10 terminators
assault squad
4 scouts all for £69

a pretty good deal for the sake of a bit of stripping and re modeling

from it i could make 3 tactical squads (different weapon load outs)
a 10 man assault squad (need a plasma pistol for sarg but that is it)
5 normal stormbolter terminators (squad fillers)
5 lightening claw terminators (need shoulder pads)
4 scouts with BP and CC

and 8 marines towards another tactical squad

some pics:

Finally my last 3 speeders to be painted up

and a rash purchase because i like the model

he will be used as a servitor for my inquisitors (rest of van saar gang to be bought!)

Finally my thoughts on the new marine codex.......AMAZING

character fluff good rules and best of all no significant change to the models i have.

looks like more kits to be bought in the next few weeks

SVA and Carnage Pt3

So this is it, my final review of the last few weekends, and now Carnage. Again this event is not a WAAC tournament, but a nice friendly arena to play lots off 40k games. The set up was 4 games at 1250 on the Saturday, followed by 3 at 1250+500 (1750) on the Sunday. The second list had to include the first list with no modifications.

So here are my lists:

1250

Master of the Forge
Dread with Assault Cannon in Pod
Dread with 2 Autocannons in Pod
Ironclad with Hammer and Heavy Flamer in Pod
Ironclad with Chanfist in Pod
Tactical squad, meltagun, multimelta, combi -melta and powerfist in Pod
10 scouts with sniper rifles and cloaks

+500

Tactical squad with Flamer and Missile launcher in Pod
Dread with Multimelta and heavy flamer in Pod
Dread with Lascannon and Missile Launcher

and here is a picture:
the only reason i took this list is that i like playing with Dreads, and I like Drop Pods. i was hoping to get 2-3
Wins and not get too blown away by any "power" lists.

Game 1: was against a 7 model grey knight list, Draigo, 2 Paladins, 2 Venerables, and 2 Dreads. unfortunately for this guy he only had 2 fist on his verneables that could hurt me and in the end even though I was locked in combat with paladins with a 2++ I eventually killed all his army apart from Draigo who was on 2 wounds. A good start.
Game 2: next up was a team England player. At the last Carnage I played him in my first ever competitive game and he just beat me. Looking back at the list I took then no wonder! again I was not too hopeful as he had brought a fully tooled up Space wolves list; Logan, Wolf guard some with terminator armour, 2 lone wolves, long fangs and 2 grey wolf squads. This was 5 objective and spear head. The idea was to drop in and take out the grey wolves and use my pods to hold him back. I was aiming for a draw. In the end my plan failed due to poor shooting when required I only just got beat. If I had noticed the time then on my last turn instead of shooting the scouts I could have moved them on to my objective and sneak a 1-1 draw but I didn't and lost 1-0...close
Game 3: daemons...I have never like playing these and it was a diagonal setup and capture and control. I held my scouts in reserve ready to outflank as the objectives were close to each board edge. I maybe could have got a win if I had been a bit more daring, but I played safe and backed up my scouts on an objective and got a draw.
Game 4: Space marines which had a little bit of everything...but by the end not much of anything. All he had left was a stubborn scout who would not die, despite all the shots on him and an immobilised vindicator. A strong win
So at the end of day 1 I was 2-1-1, and was more than happy. One more good game tomorrow and I would have the result I wanted.
Game 5: Necrons. His list was mainly all the older models and he didn't have any of the new stuff, but having played against this type of list recently I knew what to do. It was capture and control, pitched battle. He set up 3 squads near his objective and played very defensive all game. My scouts got wiped out by his scarabs on turn 1, so 4 dreads had to drop in and deal with them straight away. One of my tacts dropped on my objective and sat there; while an ironclad and another dropped near his on the last turn I was able to contest his and won!
Game 6: Space wolves, kill points dawn of war. The worst combination for my list and against another elite space wolf list. There was not much I could do or play differently and got tonked 9-4 in KP.
Game 7: Space Marines, terminators Kantor but only 2-5 man tact squads. My first turn I was able to pop a razorback and a landraider, but again attrition took its toll and I was unable to bring enough firepower to kill things quickly. Luckily he also had heavy losses and he only had left Kantor while I had a scout squad on an objective. Another win!
Final score was 4-1-2, 140 ish points and 6th position.
Over all the squad of the weekend were the scouts. Other than 1 bad game they were brilliant; causing pinning checks and even the odd glance or 2 on light vehicles. The list was surprisingly solid but did come unstuck at times against top tier list. I got beat in game 2 by the winner, beaten by 4th place and drew with 5th. Would I have done better with my dual raider Vulkan list? Who knows but I doubt I would have has as much fun.

SVA and Carnage pt2

As mentioned in Hypa's post we got split up in to good guys and bad guys. No one wanted to take the mantle so I step forward in a brave and forceful manner and picked it up! I then found out that Hypa had won his first battle and he too was a force commander. We agreed that last game tomorrow we would face each other in the APOC game.

My first game was Planetstrike defender for me. I also took up the good guy’s secret mission, which was at the end of the game have the highest placed model on the battle field. The battle was mainly decide on poor dice rolling on Docs part at crucial time. His destroyer lord had a total of 7 attacks (all of which hit) against Lysander, but only managed to force 2 saves. By the end of the battle the Necrons were completely destroyed and I claimed a total of 18 campaign points. Round 1 finished well for the good guys as we were 88-80 up. As we had such a good round I decided to spend some of the CP's on hired help. Just because we used them in the low point game doesn't make us sneaky! We just did a bit more finking than or orky friends.

Next up I played a battle mission 1750. I was launching a surprise attack on some chaos marines and was able to drop in all my pods on turn 1! Wow I thought this helps me greatly and he had to set up everything within 12" of the centre. So I dropped in and my sternguard caused 14W on his daemon prince and he died. The 2 tactical squad’s meltas some rhino transport and my ironclads were to melta the land raider and then assault out of their Lucius Pattern pods into the contents of the raider which was zerkers and a lord....easy....or so I thought. First melta missed and the second failed to pen. But not to worry as I could still assault it.... first dread immobilised itself coming from the pod, but the second hit home and ripped apart the raider. Not a bad first turn. Things still went well for me in the second turn as he could only kill a few marines and my mobile ironclad while I wiped out his obliterators and got Lysander close to his berzerkers. After this things just never seemed to work. And I lost by a single kill point! A lot of people who had seen the first turn were shocked that I lost and that was the same for both me and my opponent. I still managed to pick up some valuable campaign points but the rest f the good guys started to take a bit of a beating.

3rd game for me was another battle mission with a middle objective. I was up against a Tyrants List from the Badab War apoc books. This mission required me to defend the middle and him to capture it. By turn 3 I had engaged 1 tact squad with an ironclad, the guard squad was being whittled down by Lysander and the other tact was miles away from the objective. I was heading for a draw by turn 5 when he realised he needed to get his tact squad on an objective. Luckily for him the game went to turn 7 and I could not engage the squad and with all his run he just (it needed a careful measurement) got to within 3" of the objective. Again I picked up a few campaign points

The rest of the good guys had performed just as bad and by the end of the first day we were way behind the bad guys.

We had to go for it on Sunday so as leader I said I would do a planet strike attack. I was up against a tau list. Now while I won this game and got max campaign points it was no way an easy game. My one of my ironclads was in combat from turn 1 against broadsides then crisis suits and with a total of 27 attacks only killed some broadsides! It was terrible. I only had 4 models left at the end of the game, but I was touching all 3 bastions.

Finally the big game.... commander V commander. I was a little worried as his Kan list was still unbeaten in all its games, did I have enough to take out all those Kans????  We both had the secret mission of kill the other
Commander model. The set up was 1 superheavy or 3 normal unit. Hypa chose to put down his stompa and I put my warhound as far away from it as possible. His first turn took out my void shield and damaged my drive train... so my 2 ironclads dropped in next to the stompa and shot the melta at it taking off a structure point. Then my warhound opened up with its turbo laser destructor.....2*D hits...rolled a 5 and a 6, then another 6 and KABOOM! The stompa was left a pile of bits. From that point on I was able to take down his Kans, but I mada an honourable agreement that I would not shoot Stompnuts but he had to try and shokk attack my warhound each turn. On the last turn he sucked himself in to the warp and he had nothing left. All the orks had killed was an ironclad and 4 marines (1 of the marines had killed himself in the blast radius of a popped Kan)

But alas my heroics were to no avail and the good guys were beaten 375-425. I finished 2nd overall with victory points and I was the top scorer of campaign points.

Another great weekend arranged by the spikey club guys.

Next up Carnage

SVAX The Results Part Deux

Hi All,

As promised ill talk about game 2 from my SVAX weekend....

Game 2 Capture and Control
My Wolves VS Eldar (Larry a fine chap hailing from New Zealand)

As continued the theme this weekend Larry's Eldar were another beautifully painted army and nominated for the best painted award along with my first opponent.

As stated before my camera isn't the best but you can still get the idea how nice the eldar looked!

So the first thing Larry did is ask me if i wanted a drink so off we trundled to the bar. Thanks very much. The game itself was typical game against the eldar. One word describes it cagey. We, as always in capture and control had two objectives one in each deployment zone, but the boys from spikey had placed an additional bonus objective on the board. So unusually in an objective game i went first i placed my objective near the bonus objective giving me one point to defend instead of two and making it harder for my opponent. This defensive point was also in a building. So from this solid base i set out to try and attack Larry's objective which as it became apparent was difficult with the eldar popping around my flanks and shooting at the vinidacators side armour. The other problem which we didnt realise until it was too late is we played slow. Larry was a top guy and we got distracted talking all things 40K.

As we got to turn 3 as is usual in a capture and control we had Mexican stand off that is... until I got a good round of shooting off against the guardians and war walkers holding his objective removing most of these squads i sent in the fenrisian wolves (which all weekend long caught people out with how quick they move). This cleared his objective meaning i was now a winning position.

In to turn 4 (the last turn as we were slow) and i was undone by the classic eldar move meaning the eldar swooped the Jetbikes in and contested my objective making it a draw! Well as you noticed above i chose to go first which is unusual in an objective game and i nearly beat the eldar. As we always say, "just 1 more turn!"

The bonus objective was mine however, as there was no contesting on these objectives simply closest model claims it and i had surrounded it! This gained my team money to spend on upgrades for the forthcoming game.

Hope you enjoyed my Report?

SVAX The Results

Hi All,

What a weekend....... Fantastic I really cant believe I (and in LukoDakka's case) we havent tried this kind of thing before. I have no doubt all the guys from the code will post up their thoughts on the weekend's action.

Anyway before i begin to go on about how the weekend went for me the final results are here
http://www.spikyclub.com/e107/page.php?29

Ive also decided that my camera is frankly at best rubbish at worst........ So i took a shed load of photos and most are unusable. A new camera maybe in order for this blogging malarky!

Right as i dont want this to be the longest post ever written (not likely) ill talk about my first game.

EARTHFALL (modified planet strike mission)

Doc's Wolves 1500 VS Simon's Mechanium Themed Deamon Hunters 1500

First off Simon's army absolutely blew me away (not literally in gaming terms) with the standard of the painting the thought behind the background, the conversions and the clever use of epic models.

This army was cleary picked purely by theme and indeed if you have already read the results (link above) then you will know he won best painted army! Fair play and well deserved.

On to the game....... (not a full battle report don't worry)

Earthfall is basically a planet strike mission with one objective to defend. I defended and Simon attacked sort of.... To be fair i can sum this game by producing a list of the spectacular dice show that we had in turn 2, here goes....

Grand Master had to make 4 standard terminator armour saves he proceeded to roll all 1's.

I say, "ill just shoot my assault cannon at the land raider to get it out of the way before i assault it" (Oh i definately got it out of the way) 3 hits produce one 6 in the penetration roll rolling an additional 6 for the D3 extra and then rolling a 6for damage.

I shoot 2 krak missile's at his dreadnought producing 1 hit followed by a 6 for penetration and then another 6 for damage.

I wasnt immune to the bad luck though either i made 5 armour saves on the long fangs from a round of shooting failing them all!

Sometimes its truly amazing what 40K can throw up and im not sure ill forget that turn for a very long time! As for the result it was pretty difficult for Simon to come back from that position after turn 2 and i got a victory in the first game hoorah! Simon and me laughed hard with this game. He was a top bloke and deserved his best painted army award. So here's another pic!

More on SVAX soon

Nurgle Death Guard WIP

The Beginning
So its been a while since my last post but thats because Papa Nurgle has had me slaving away on more pestilent carrying disease bringers!
Death Guard Space Marines
First off it was time for prep work to begin, I got the Forgeworld sprues out and did the neccessary trimming.
For any first timers to forgeworld kit - it does requires a hell of a lot of tidying up. Get your snippers, file and a ho bby knife and go to work. Once you've done the tidying up you then need to give it all a good wash, I used a bit of cif in some warm water and gave them a careful scrub with a toothbrush. You may think this is a bit extreme but if you don't, you'll find that when you come to base coating the bad boys the paint won't take, so don't miss it out!
*Don't forget to put the sink plug in when your cleaning! Last thing you want is £20 sprues flying down the drain!*
Once I'd done all that it was time to snip off and clean the marine boxed set for assembly. I decided I wanted my Deathguard to be carrying predominantly chainswords and Bolters not bolt pistols just because I think it looks cooler. I was gonna do a few arm manipulations and alternative poses to make them look that little bit different as well. Heres a selection of them.
LtoR - Full 10 DG Squad, Arms twists, Sculpted open right hand on icon bearer.
More twisting arms and wrists, a couple were pinned to keep them solid
I also slapped them on some new bases I purchased fom Ebay, "Doc" pointed me in the direction of these resin slate bases and were very reasonably priced from a company called "616 Designs" thoroughly recommended by the code40k I would say!
Right with these finished it was on to the Termies -
Death Guard Terminators
Well I'll jump straight to the builds, there was quite alot of intense cleaning needed and the shoulder pads had been slightly damaged on delivery but nothing major.
I cleaned them up and heres the result
LtoR - Full 5 DG Teminators, Aspiring Champ - Combi Melta & Chainfist (what else?)
LtoR - Power Fist & Combi Melta, Lightning Claws
LtoR - Combi Flamer & Chainfist, Heavy Flamer & Powerfist
I'll get these lot sprayed soon and start painting them all, I'll bang some more pictures on when they're further forward.
Enjoy

Space Wolves Dreadnought Finished

Well its been a while since i last posted. I had a dose of nurgle's rot. This is the finished pictures of my converted black reach dreadnought. Im really pleased with the outcome. The only job left to do is to name the dreadnought. Any suggestions for this would be welcome (only 5 letters or less)? Wolf priest is next?

Space Wolves Dreadnought WIP

Hi all, as you can see I've been working on converting the black reach dreadnought.

A brief summary of what i did to get this far:

1. Ordered resin base from 616 Designs, added space marine helmet with a drilled out hole for effect.
2. Drilled out gun barrels and drilled some bullet holes in the dreadnought's armour.
3. Added skull to right leg of the dreadnought from space wolf accs sprue.
4. Added wolf tail talisman underneath the main body.
5. Cut wolf pelt from space wolf back and added to multi melta arm. Filled in edges and top with green stuff sculpted to look like fur.
6. Added space wolf icon on to the top of the dreadnought (taken from the SW terminator set.
7. Green stuffed over the canopy to cover angel wings, sculpted it to look like fur. Then i added the skull head which is the skull from the chaos marauders banner bearer. I then green stuffed the edges and sculpted it to look like fur.
8. Finally i drilled and pinned the left foot to the rock surface for additional strength.

I think its turned out well and I'm tempted to do another! I will post some paint updates as i go.

Thats all folks

Space Wolves Drednought

Hi all,

Well as always i end up back at 40k shortly after doing warhammer, its just to be honest when ive got games coming up.... im good at working to deadlines. So with games lined up for my space wolves i thought i would have a go at changing the assault on black reach dreadnought into a space wolf dreadnought using some spares from my bits box and a little green stuff. Pictured to the left is some of the components im going to use. I have also ordered a slate scenic base for him to stand on and will post progress pictures as i work through the project.
