Venerable Dreadnought

I am back from my holidays and I am feeling refreshed and ready for more painting.

First up is a Venerable dreadnought I have been painting. It is the older metal one, which I like more than the current plastic kit. I had been looking around for the model for a while and seen a few on eBay for silly prices (£40+). I spotted this one and I got it for £18. It was missing a finger, but a bit of green-stuff and I don’t think you can notice the difference.

It has been painted in a similar scheme to that of my Masters of the Chapter and other high ranking officials of the chapter. A nice deep dark gold for the armour makes the model look a little more important!

I also added some more details to one of my grey knight banners.

As well as adding some symbols to a company standard.

Next up is Azrael and 2 crusader henchmen.

And finally the code guy are planning special event for December, I will let MAD-DOK explain later but it will involve lots of nice models…….

Scenery, Battles and yes more Marines

Another long absence from the hobby. Life is taking over my geeking pleasures. But now England have been dumped out of the World Cup i hopefully have a bit more time to spend "completing" the models I have.

First a battle. my first big game of 7th. I was playing against my brother and my dad. between them they could muster 3k of marines (minatours) and eldar. we ignored the allies matrix and a few of the min squad sizes and played with what they had. I took my marines with a detachment of grey knights and an inquisitor.

I took:

kantor with 9 sternguard (4 combi grav guns) in a pod
librarian with 9 sternguard (4 combi meltas) in a pod
tactical squad in a pod
10 scouts
10 assault marines
10 devators in a rhino
Stormtalon
Thunderfire

librarian with 10 grey knight terminators
eversor assassin
Inqisitor
retinue (2 servitors, 3 psykers, 2 deamon host, 2 arco)

Morloc with 5 TH/SS terms
10 assault marines with minotaur special chaplain
10 tact in rhino
10 tact
5 scouts
Special contempor
Stormtalon
Lib level 2 9 stern in pod
Farseer
10 guardian
Warlock 8 guardian (we know they are a minimum of 10)
6 scorpions
6 banshees
9 rangers
Ranger special character
5/6 dire avengers

Both were battle forged

We played the new missions where we had 3 per tern and they weren't secret.

Main points.
Psychic phase is harder to get power off. Yes they did go off and it is also harder to deny but nowhere near as “game breaking” as the doom sayers predicted.
I cast less than normal even with more psykers on the board!

Missions level the game a lot. You get the mission and then can complete them in your turn, before your opponent can react.
You need mobility. Scoring units are useful to trump things sat on an objective. E.g. if I have a thunderfire on an back objective and a necron warrior squad comes within 3” of it. The necron warrior squad can trump the thunderfire and claim the objective. But all units can get an objective which is a very interesting dynamic.

They game changed throughout and you need a bit of everything. At no point was there ever a hopeless situation for either player. Yes you may need a bit of luck with the objective cards, but there are 36 of them so luck is diluted a bit.

Final score was 8-8. Close throughout. I may have been able to nick it but needed a cast gate of infinity, which failed! and the assassin only consolidated 1 when needing 3+ to get to another objective!

some pictures:

No matter how good your tactics are.......

Kantor kicking ass, shortly before Morloc said hello!

I have nearly finished the scenery in my last post, but got side traced in completing the Sternguard squad for the battle.

i have sprayed up some craters and will quickly wash them and they will be ready for the baord.

model wise i am painting a witch hunter inquisitor and 2 more assassins.

I hope to get some more 7th ed games in over the summer.

Grey Knight Dread - Dreadful December Complete

I don't like leaving something until the last minute but at this crazy time of year it couldn't be helped.
I have completed the Grey Knight Dread.

I generally keep a small amount of colours to a model but I have tried to make the force weapon look a little more psychic.

There is also the Dark eldar "in bits"

And finally here is the psycannon

Here is the dread with the rest of my Grey Knight force

I have a further post which has all my other dreads for my marine army

Dave's Dread-Full December - Grey Knights

have managed to squeeze a bit of painting time in over the weekend to get a bit more of my dread complete.

I still have more of the detail to complete but it is nearly finished

The back is looking a bit plain and I will see what I can do make it more interesting

I think I have only one more update to do for this, when it is complete

Adeptus Custodes Contemptor Dreadnoughts - Dread-Full December

Well as its christmas, its bargain time, so its 2 for the price of 1 for Dread-Full December!
These guys are for my Adeptus Custodes army (counts as Grey Knights) which I have had semi-complete for a while now.
Although they are Contemptor models, every man and his canine companion knows that grey knights always rock best with the double twin-linked autocannon in either standard or venerable flavour, give them the psybolt ammo upgrade for a measly 5pts and its S8 dakka dakka bitches!
After assembly and pinning I gave them an airbrush basecoat of Vallejo Grey Primer. I chose to spray them with Vallejo Liquid Gold. Vallejo Liquid gold is a fantastic paint although it is not an acrylic, it is made up of gold pigment floating in alcohol. You apply it, the alcohol evaporates and you are left with a very vibrant, shimmering gold. Just the ticket for the emperors finest! Anyone thinking of using it, word of warning, do not get water in it as it will instantly rust..no joke. Also a synthetic type brush is best as the alcohol can eat away your general citadel brushes. After the basecoat I gave it a thin spray varnish to seal it and then applied Oil washes. I've now just hit the highlighting stage.
So here they are WIP: -

The right dread is currently more finished than left. They both still need substantial highlighting and shading in some areas. Bases have been weathered but I need to go in and add more details to the bases. I think i'm going to add some snow so i'll probably do a little tutorial on how I do that. I also have some brass details that I may add to give them a little extra as the armour plates look a little bare, perhaps some freehand on the kneepads may help but we shall see.
I will also do a full post of the army after dreadful December draws to a close.

I'll just leave you with a sneak peak from the army

Cheers
Luko Dakka

Dave's Dread-Full December Grey Knights Dread

I have starting adding some colour to the metal. A blue wash for the armour plates and black for the metal. I have highlighted in chainmail and a further detailed highlight in mithril silver.

Where there is writing I have washed in agrax earthshade

This photo shows how dark the miniature started (the base is boltgun metal) and how light it is now.

The mound at the back has the parts of a dark eldar on it. This i will paint a vibrant colour to stand out against the silver of the dread.

The details I will be doing in gold.

Dave's Dastardly Dreadnought - Dread-Full December

The first door on the advent calendar is open as the build up to Christmas starts. I have been out of the hobby for the last 2.5 months. In that time all I have been doing is a few games with the new marine codex (which is amazing and full of great options)

As doc has introduced this month the code guys are going to all be doing a dread or similar.

My entry is going to be a Grey Knight dreadnought. I got this model  4 years ago as a gift from Hypapist along with a load of grey knights for helping out at his wedding. I have already painted all the terminators for a nice paladin army (brutal in 5th but toned down a little in6th). So this guy has been sat in my to do pile for a long time.

It came to me under coated in bolt gun metal. This is a little dark for my liking. The terminators are base coated in chain mail. I have already started to apply some chain mail to the model to brighten it.
The gun is not started as originally it came with the lascannon option but I like the psycannon option (in game it will be an assault cannon  with pay bolt ammo)

Here is a picture of how it looks before I start work on it

Hopefully this will spur me in to action for painting as I have a bit of a back log.

I'll post back in a few days with some updates.

A Busy Weekend

After having a disappointing sporting weekend (Lewis being rammed off the track by a nutter and England's slow painful Euro exit finally happening, I though a bit of cheering up would be in order.

so here is Draigo

and here is Stern (i have had this model for a while and only just got round to painting him)

and finally some more paladin (they still have some details to pick out, eyes etc. but are almost done).

so that is 10 down 10 to go. i should be able to get them done by next week!

The First 5 Paladins

As mentioned above with all the football on it gives me plenty of time to do some painting.

I have completed 5 paladins now (minus some details)

I did have some close up pics bu they are too blurry to be any good

so that is 5 down and 15 to go! I have built up the last 2 hammer arms, sprayed and washed them. I will weapon swap the 2 guys this weekend so everything is now WYSWYG

Paladin Update

well with all the sitting down and watching the football gives me loads of time to paint (multi-tasking)

and at last an update! i have done a fair bit on the paladins

they are all washed now and helmets/weapons base coated.

7 have moved on a bit further with some highlighting and some washes

this is pretty much a complete one. a few more details and highlights to finish him off

there i so much detail on the newer models. as i am painting old metal ones and the new plastic the difference between them is huge.

also this is my idea for the banner

the other squad has a red border. i think i will pick the detail out in non-metallic gold not sure how it will work but you can only try.

and finally getting my daughter involved

she is calling it Mulan as it is a girl dressed as a boy warrior......she is starting the princess chapter

edit: due to using XP and IE7 i am having difficulties uplaoding pics at the moment i will add later
