A New Hobby Season - Confession of a 40K Addict

Hi All,

For years I have followed Dave's from confession of the 40k addicts progress using his hobby season format.  It has seemed to be a nice motivational tool.  So when Dave a couple of weeks back put a shout to see if anyone would like to join him for the next season starting I thought yep I am in for this! Extra motivation tools cant be a bad thing right?  So what is a hobby season  guess you are asking?

Well its simple and the best thing in a hobbyist arsenal a list!  A list of projects you would like to complete in the next 12 months.  Dave has also kindly made some icons or stamps to go along with the hobby season.

Ok along with the stamp above Dave has made some cool completed stamps which I attend to use. They are split down into major and minor hobby list stamps.  First up is the major stamp followed by my list of major projects for the next 12 months.

 Major Projects 2016/17

Mortarion Primarch of the Death Guard
Spartan Assault Tank
Knight Cerastus Lancer
Cerebus Tank
New Desert Themed Board
Deadzone Board (not 40k thats ok right!)
Leman Russ Primarch of the Space Wolves
Imperial Navy Avenger Strike Fighter
Necron Teseract Ark
MDF Necromunda Terrain
Re paint baneblade

Ok so there are 3 major scenery projects on here which is typical of me!  I love scenery so not surprised by this.  I will be surprised if I finish all 3!  This is 11 major projects but its a list right (dare to dream!).

Minor Projects 2016/17 (this could go on for a while!)
2 X Chimeras
1 X Taurox
1 X Valkyrie
2 X 19th Dicer Psykers
1 X Colonel 19th Dicers
4 X Repaint of Leman Russ Tanks
5 X Enforcer Pathfinders
1 X Enforcer Strider
5 X Enforcer Peacekeepers
10 X Volkite Death Guard
2 X Rhinos Death Guard
3 X Medusa's Death Guard
30 X Tactical Legion Death Guard
10 X Assault Marines Death Guard
10 X Deathshrouds Death Guard
6 X Jetbikes Death Guard
3 X Drop Pods Space Wolves
3 X Thunderwolf Cav Space Wolves
1 X Iron Priest Space Wolves
20 X Fenrisian Wolves
1 X Wraithknight Eldar
6 X Fire Dragons Eldar

Ok, I am stopping for now as this will get ridiculous and achieve the opposite of motivation!  Alongside this motivational tool I will continue painting points which I update on the right hand side of the blog and my annual review around new year.  My basic target has always been to paint a minimum of 100 minis a year which I am on target for this year so far!

So how many projects do you reckon I will complete from the lists above? Let me know in the comments and also please share links of you hobby lists / motivational techniques?

Cheers

Showcase Cerastus Knight-Castigator

In my last post I was undecided if I was to paint up my scouts or start my second knight.

Well as you can see from the title I made my decision.

This is my CERASTUS KNIGHT-CASTIGATOR.

It is the same colour scheme as the lancer and here they are together. I still need to do the transfers, but i will do them both together now they are complete.

I am a big fan of this type of knight rather the the normal one from GW. My next purchase for the knights has already been made…..

In the long term want to complete a household, but I need to figure out how to get the “GW” knight to fit in with these taller models. Maybe I just have to build them all as crusaders with the top weapon to give the added height.

I am currently working on my 3rd squad of centurions. This time armed with heavy bolters, and I have started the camo cloaked scouts

I hope to have these done in the next few days when I can hopefully look to start either a fire raptor or a storm eagle.

SHOWCASE CERASTUS KNIGHT-LANCER and a new hobby home

It’s been a while since my last post.

I have finished* renovating my new house and have moved in.
*in that it is liveable, with some odd jobs and touch ups still to carry out

Importantly I have got a space for my painting station

It is near a large window, so has a great amount of light.

I have been able to spend a fair bit of time back on my models. We don’t have a TV in the living room now so that distraction is no longer there. More time for painting!

I started a Knight Lancer before I moved but it has been on hold for a few months. Anyway it is now complete.

BUILD/CONVERSION:

The base has an old broken rhino modelled on to it. This was a £2 purchase from eBay, which I thought I could save. It has been put to better use. The knight itself is pretty much as is. There was a slight issue with positioning of the legs as the pistons weren’t long enough so needed some green stuff to fill in the gap. Same for the power cable on that side. This is my first big FW model. It was quite easy to put together. My big bug bear is the lance. It has had 3 hot baths and still didn’t sit straight.

PAINTING/BASING:

The models are undercoated with Army Painter ultramarine blue and chainmail.

Blue: I thought the base was a bit pale, so I painted it in macragge blue to deepen it. I pained the recesses of the carapace with drakenhoff nightshade and highlighted in calgar blue. I should have washed the other plates edges but didn’t. I was hoping the gold would make a better edge. I was going to do another level of highlighting, but I’m going to see how this looks for a while. I would rather not have them that do them untidily
Gold: as per the recipe for painting stormcasts. It’s a little red than the gold I wanted but it’s a nice colour. The lance was done slightly different with a wash of the turquoise technical paint and a blue glaze
Metal: washed in nuln oil, highlighted in Ironbreaker and then dry brushed in Necron Compound, odd areas washed in agrax earthhade

I still have a lot of transfers to put on it to finish it off but I am pretty happy with it.

WHAT NEXT?

I had 2 presents of scouts so I have combined them.

The first is camo cloak scouts with silenced bolters. These fall in to the category of cool looking, but not good in game.

I am lucky that I seem to have hit the point where I can now model units with options that aren't "competitive" as I have the "good" ones; these are for fun.

Second is another close combat squad.

I am a few arms missing after the building the first squad, but I have some scout bikers turning ups so I may have some spare parts to complete the unit. This squad will need a Storm to carry them in.

I have built them, but I’m not sure if I want to paint them yet, mainly as I have started building a Castigator…….TBC

40K Imperial Guard Tanks Showcase - 19th Dicers

Evening All,

Doc back with another block rocking beat......

Eh no back with another blog posting video...

Ok give up with the crappy jokes already.  Tonight I want to showcase my finished tanks for the first two games of The Cypra Incident.  Really happy with the end result and enjoyed the weathering process immensely.

Before I launch into the new stuff in case you haven't been following the progress on arming for the Cypra Incident please click here.

Ok first off a few photos for new models I have finished alongside the tanks:

I have another 26 models on the go at various stages.  I am using a mixture of models to represent the army from cultists, forgeworld, catachan guard and necromunda figures.  I think this creates the feel of an army on the verge of turning away from the imperium having been abandoned on backwater planet.

Next up is the main showcase video for the tanks.  This time I have gone for a showcase video as opposed to a picture of my shiny head (thanks INNERMECH!).  3 of these tanks are old models which have been stripped and re painted which has worked really well.  Hopefully this will be the last time I repaint them!

As always please leave your comments and suggestions for improvements.

Thanks

The Great British Build Off - Pre Heresy Death Guard - Masses Now Built, Re basing - Big Jump Forward!

Hi All,

DOC here to showcase a big leap forward on the construction of the pre heresy death guard.  Here follows a giant picture dump showing all the models I have built for the death guard.

Heavy Support Squad (troops for death guard with the rite of war mmm rockets)

Volkite Culverin Support Squad (nice to have some different weapons to 40k)

Command Squad - close combat squad nice to use some of those lovely mkIII power wepon bits

Legion Tactical Squad -fleshed out and sergeant added with a power fist

I have also in the build process re based a load of my death guard on to 32mms.  These are 40k marines as I will use this army in 40k as a space marine army.

Sternguard Vets - The best spare bit kit in the GW range!

Devastators - Mixed bag made from my bits box but all good!

Vanguard Vets and Chaplain - great models and again loads of bits!

So having bought 100 32mm bases I have no used them all up and ordered another 50.  I really am aiming to get this into a usable state before the painting begins.

Comments are welcome

Cheers

2015 review and 2016 objectives

Overall 2015 was a pretty successful year for me doing hobby related activities.

I have managed to paint at least 1 squad a month and painted a lot of units that had been sat in boxes for quite some time.

My painting challenge (like doc, painting gives me money to spend) didn't really work out. Over the year I painted enough to spend £250, but spent a lot more that that. this is not too bad as I have a monthly budget as well which I stuck to successfully. This is a must for me as if I don't then I can get a massive back log of models to paint.

My current back log to do is:

5 TH/SS terminators
3*3 Centurions
Storm Eagle
Fire Raptor
2 Knights
Sammael on Speeder
2*5 Scouts
Bike squad
3*10 Tactical
2*10 Assault
2*10 Devastator
a few drop pods

There is nothing new on the horizon for my marines at the moment so I don't see this changing soon.

I have started one of the knights so hopefully i intend to show this off soon.

Unfortunately all my painting equipment has been moved over to my new house. My new house however has no water, heating, kitchen and needs decorating! we don't expect to have moved in and set everything up until the end of January. That means no hobby related things happening until at least February.

May this will give me time to post more of my thoughts about 40k and the hobby on hear during that time or get some better pictures of my brothers models.

Happy New Year to you all

Death Guard Progress - Ho Ho Ho Horus Heresy 2015

Good Afternoon All,

This is a bit of a catch all post.  I will update progress or lack of on the death guard, a small review of the year and my usual 2016 objectives.

Firstly my heresy progress which has been hampered by man flu and uni work.  However, I have worked out the recipe which I suggested in my last post.

It will be light grey primer (ab), wash (hand) 45 degree white (ab), paint other colours (hand) and finally weather (sponge).  This is so much quicker than my last method by hand!

Here is the progress I made on 5 tactical legionnaires:

Early days for this squad but I feel I have finally sorted the 'how' bit out two years later!  Comments are most welcome and I will show some fellow code players at the weekend on our new years game.

I also built for the weekend some additional bloodclaws.  I mixed up the parts and used new kit, plus older parts and some metal bloodclaw shoulder pads.  Nice to be back to the wolves for a bit.  Shame I havent had time to throw some paint at them!

Right last year (or actually very early this year lol) I set my self simple objectives and they were to complete some in progress projects.  I did manage a few things this year.  Memory test time:

1 Stormwolf
1 Forgeworld Space Wolf Dread
ok failed already going back through blog posts!

1 Necron Artillery piece
1 Death Guard Graviton Rapier
5 Death Guard Marines

Blimey that is a terrible return compared to my normal output!  The reality is doing a masters at the same time as working full time and managing my health means I am not that upset.  So what about 2016?

2016 Objectives are (not all hobby related):

Spatial Planning Masters (2nd Year)
Adoption Match (my wife and I are approved fingers crossed at little one joins our family).

So the two above are going to slow down any hobby....

Necromunda Scenery
More Airbrush Practice
Story Campaign with Tweedy ahem (Boss Bludtoof)
Still record painting points but not against spend
Accurately record hobby spend
Log games played
Paint some death guard and space wolves.

All that remains to be said is Happy New Year to you all and I hope 2016 is fruitful, healthy and happy.

Peace Out
