The Cypra Incident; Ork Lootas ready to roll!

Hey All

Bluddtoof here with some more of my Orks; these are the last models I need for the first day of gaming in our upcoming narrative campaign, The Cypra Incident. Both Doc and myself are using this campaign to motivate ourselves to paint up new stuff and old stuff which has been sitting on shelves and in dusty cupboards for years sometimes, I'm sure a great many of you know exactly how that feels!
Anyway on with the Lootas, I've painted all 12 I own but only 11 will be used in the first mission of the campaign, I'm sure number 12 will have his day later on though.
I was looking at my Ork collection as I put the Lootas in my cabinets and I noticed that even though I've constantly tried to maintain a consistent look over the years (17 years now collecting my Orks!!) they have changed slightly as I've progressed; originally they were really grubby and dirty with only a few splashes of colour, usually the red, black and white teef moteef and yellow and blue rokkits as well as a very few spot colours. Now though they are far more colourful, I haven't consciously made this change but I am using a much broader palette and keeping the grubby patchwork feel by using heavy and dark washes on all the otherwise bright areas. All in all I'm really pleased with the newer stuff, I think with new washes being very flat I can inject colour and high contrast without a glossy look.
So enough waffle, on with the piccies... Quite a lot....

And some individual shots....

Hope you like them, as ever C and C welcome.
My next project is some new terrain for the campaign; mission 2 will take place in and around a military compound so we want some fencing and watch towers, I've got a cunning but complex idea to try so watch out over the next few weeks for more on that...

SHOWCASE CERASTUS KNIGHT-LANCER and a new hobby home

It’s been a while since my last post.

I have finished* renovating my new house and have moved in.
*in that it is liveable, with some odd jobs and touch ups still to carry out

Importantly I have got a space for my painting station

It is near a large window, so has a great amount of light.

I have been able to spend a fair bit of time back on my models. We don’t have a TV in the living room now so that distraction is no longer there. More time for painting!

I started a Knight Lancer before I moved but it has been on hold for a few months. Anyway it is now complete.

BUILD/CONVERSION:

The base has an old broken rhino modelled on to it. This was a £2 purchase from eBay, which I thought I could save. It has been put to better use. The knight itself is pretty much as is. There was a slight issue with positioning of the legs as the pistons weren’t long enough so needed some green stuff to fill in the gap. Same for the power cable on that side. This is my first big FW model. It was quite easy to put together. My big bug bear is the lance. It has had 3 hot baths and still didn’t sit straight.

PAINTING/BASING:

The models are undercoated with Army Painter ultramarine blue and chainmail.

Blue: I thought the base was a bit pale, so I painted it in macragge blue to deepen it. I pained the recesses of the carapace with drakenhoff nightshade and highlighted in calgar blue. I should have washed the other plates edges but didn’t. I was hoping the gold would make a better edge. I was going to do another level of highlighting, but I’m going to see how this looks for a while. I would rather not have them that do them untidily
Gold: as per the recipe for painting stormcasts. It’s a little red than the gold I wanted but it’s a nice colour. The lance was done slightly different with a wash of the turquoise technical paint and a blue glaze
Metal: washed in nuln oil, highlighted in Ironbreaker and then dry brushed in Necron Compound, odd areas washed in agrax earthhade

I still have a lot of transfers to put on it to finish it off but I am pretty happy with it.

WHAT NEXT?

I had 2 presents of scouts so I have combined them.

The first is camo cloak scouts with silenced bolters. These fall in to the category of cool looking, but not good in game.

I am lucky that I seem to have hit the point where I can now model units with options that aren't "competitive" as I have the "good" ones; these are for fun.

Second is another close combat squad.

I am a few arms missing after the building the first squad, but I have some scout bikers turning ups so I may have some spare parts to complete the unit. This squad will need a Storm to carry them in.

I have built them, but I’m not sure if I want to paint them yet, mainly as I have started building a Castigator…….TBC

Old Stuff Day 2016

Hi All,

So today is old stuff day a brainchild of the Warhammer 39,999 blog but to be honest I picked it up from Dave on Confessions of a 40k adict.  The idea is today we celebrate the old but good posts of our blog and others.  Code40k blog has been going for over 6 years now so there is quite a lot to choose from!  The authorship over the blog has changed over the years with the only constant being me!

Everyone's at it! First Video Blog

Hey guys and Girls, Tom here with a quick post

Watching the work of some of the other Code guys got me inspired so I decided to have a little mess about with some apps on the IPad and managed to pop a small video together. Have a watch if your so inclined, I apologise it's a little rough around the edges but it's a learning curve and feed back is greatly appreciated :)

Cheers all

40K Imperial Guard Tanks Showcase - 19th Dicers

Evening All,

Doc back with another block rocking beat......

Eh no back with another blog posting video...

Ok give up with the crappy jokes already.  Tonight I want to showcase my finished tanks for the first two games of The Cypra Incident.  Really happy with the end result and enjoyed the weathering process immensely.

Before I launch into the new stuff in case you haven't been following the progress on arming for the Cypra Incident please click here.

Ok first off a few photos for new models I have finished alongside the tanks:

I have another 26 models on the go at various stages.  I am using a mixture of models to represent the army from cultists, forgeworld, catachan guard and necromunda figures.  I think this creates the feel of an army on the verge of turning away from the imperium having been abandoned on backwater planet.

Next up is the main showcase video for the tanks.  This time I have gone for a showcase video as opposed to a picture of my shiny head (thanks INNERMECH!).  3 of these tanks are old models which have been stripped and re painted which has worked really well.  Hopefully this will be the last time I repaint them!

As always please leave your comments and suggestions for improvements.

Thanks

30K First Legion Dark Angels Showcase Video

Hi All,

Today is my first ever attempt at a post under the watchful eye of DOC! and also our first attempt at a showcase video.

I have spent the last couple of weeks working on my first legion for 30K and have tried a number of new techniques including OSL, Weathering, Sponge Weathering and airbrushing.

When painting black it is a reverse shading effect by painting the lighter colours on the underside in this case I sprayed vallejo dark sea grey followed by vallejo light grey and blended it vallejo black.

The bases were my first attempt at a Mars effect using forgeworld "Rust" weathering powder.  I felt
the bases were a great contrast to the darker colour scheme of the first legion.

Enjoy the video and please comment below as I would like to understand how to make them better!

We will be doing more showcase videos here on Code40K so please click subscribe on our new youtube channel.  Doc has already put a couple of videos for you to enjoy.

Cheers

Skitarii shenanigans

Very quick post!

I finally pulled my finger out and attacked the skitarii boxes my wife got me for my birthday. Last year. In May.

I painted 5 guys when I first got them and when I returned to them I realised I'd totally forgotten how I did the scheme! Oh well...it was fun experimenting.

Love these guys loads though and am happy to have actually finished a force up to a reasonable standard ( I lie actually I still have one walker to paint....)

I'll do a grouper group photo at some point.

I finished the other 5 guys for this squad last but haven't photographed them as of yet.

This squad I tend to run as my warlords unit unless I run them alongside my knights.

Finally my dune walker.....pretty proud of this guy as I managed to hammer him out in one day as a bit of a personal challenge.

Having relatives that live in the desert is great for finding basing materials.

Yes that lizard is real. Yes it was dead when I found it!

As ever, thanks for reading - sorry this post has been a little short and sweet, I'll try and do better next time!

Later all :)

The Great British Build off - Heresy Arms Race - The Mechanicum

The Mechanicum
So heres my initial offering to the Code40k's group effort to try to get into 30k in a big way. I've plumped for a double helping of Heresy goodness. Since the 1st Heresy Book dropped I've been adding to a slow and steady Sons of Horus army but for this project I am concentrating on The Mechanicum.
Theres nothing more awesome than Big Robots kicking ass and since these dropped from Forgeworld I've been looking to get some. I am a big fan of the whole grimdark, almost steampunk aesthetic these guys have and I'm looking forward to getting them all built up so I can get some paint on them & get some games in. Heres a few I've built up recently: -

 Thanatar Siege Automata

Myrmidon Destructors (3 more to build)

Thallax Cohort (13 more to build)

I'll post up as I add to the army and touch on potential army lists as I work to be game ready.
Still no idea on colour schemes but once I've decided i'll probably dive right in on the big fella, stramngely I find the bigger models easier to work on!
Until next time

More Thunderwolves Ride In and A New Bike Mounted Rune Priest

Hi All,

Doc back with some more preparation for the Cypra Incident: Birth of the Beast of Cypra campaign. Firstly I have added a couple more Thunderwolves to take me up to a full squad of 5.

These two have been added as none of the other 3 have high strength or AP2 weapons which has proven to be a weakness in the past.  I have to say I really love these models!

I have also kit bashed together a rune priest on a bike for not other reason than I thought it might be a nice option.

I will give this guy some glowing eyes in the paint job and paint the runes on the sword to glow also. He is also covered in many totems as befits his position within the chapter.

As always comments are welcome.

Cheers

Taurox Prime - Video The Build conversion using Victorian Minatures Parts - Arming for The Cypra Incident

Hi All,

Doc here back with some more Cypra Incident coverage and a bonifidy first for the blog a video! Yes I have taken the plunge and dared to put my ugly mug on camera but before I do that.  Whats this Cypra Incident you may be thinking?  So if you are new to our narrative campaign check back to the following:

Launch Post

Orks Introduction Post

Orks Bikers Post

My list for the 2nd tier mission uses a Taurox which up until a couple of weeks ago I didn't own.  So off I went and ordered one from my FLGS Worcester Wargames and also ordered wheels and a suspension kit all the way from Australia via Victoria Minatures.  So being as I wanted to test my video skills or complete lack there of I thought I would do a short explanation video on the tank.  See below and go gentle on the comments I am a NEWB!  Any advice on editing and so on go for it.  For info this is filmed on an IPAD mini I cannot afford any spangly video equipment.

Feedback is welcome,

Cheers
