Scibor 54mm Display Piece

Hi All,

So to start this post heres a question; How many of our mothers take a genuine interest in our Hobby?  Well im nearly 33 and still remember when i was boy, my mum painting the goblins from 3rd edition warhammer gold!!  Yes the classic of not shaking the paint up first!  The funny thing is she was so happy with her efforts.  Anyway i digress... 6 months ago my mum asked, "when are you going paint me something for my mantle piece" me, "er never"  After the hotspot noise had gone off in the room it changed to, "you are going to paint me something!"  Me recovering composure and seizing an oppurtunity, "ok its your 60th birthday early next year ill do one for then!" (thinking thats ages away and she will forget!)

Fast forward to today guess what she didnt forget and reminded me so at xmas!  And joking aside its quite nice to be asked to a display piece.  So next question is what to do? and how to get it done for the 16th March 2013!  (there will be no deadline stretch on this one!)   So after playing on the internet for a few hours i chose:  (drum roll).......

"Alfred The Fearless Monster Killer" by scibor minatures

This is the first scibor figure i have bought and to be fair i wasnt entirely happy with the mold, sheer amount of flash and how brittle the hat and gun are!  In the process of building the model the arm holding the gun broke.  This is now held together by three metal pins!  Despite this i like the figure and have added some little touches a cloth drape on the hat and a captains armband affair which i intend to use roman numerals to date the model!  Lastly i cut some rod up for used shell casings on the base.

 

 

Im not quite sure what the colour scheme will be yet but in my mind hes a witch hunter (Van Helsing) type character.  So muted shades i expect.  I will post pictures once ive finished it.

Dakka-dakka-dakka-dakka-Hahahahahahahahahhahahahahah-Dakka-dakka-BOOOOOOOM!

So, SVA XII is just round the corner and I'm clearly not gonna get my marine drop pod list finished in time. I toyed with the idea of taking a Tau force, what with 6th ed being gun friendly, however after due consideration I still think Tau are out of their league and desperately in need of a new codex.
I then had a mooch round my painting room and spotted my Ork fighta/bomma kits still sat in their boxes since last year. Hey presto mega nobz, boyz, more boyz, grotz aplenty, kanz, lootas, kannonz, shokk attack gunz and the joyous dakka jet ahoy!!
Ork lists are just easy..... stick in all the glorious killy stuff you love and you're on to a winner, even if you lose every game! Most fun army in the hobby for my money. I can guarantee I'll have a great weekend stomping all over beakies and bad-beakies and stoopid pointy eared space demons. Haha!
Oh yeah and I'll also be taking my Skullhamma battlefortress and some rokkit buggies for the mini apoc games! Sweet!
So, enough gloating! I've spent the last 2 days turning 1 1/2 fighta/bomma kits into a dakka jet suitable to grace the forces of Boss Bluddtoof. Here's a few piccies........

Pre Heresy Death Guard Progress

So im back post christmas and new year blues.  So painting wise on the death guard i havent been able to do much over the festive period as i completed a couple of Necron projects for the code xmas bash.  (Ill post those separately).

After the purchase of Dark Vengenace at Games Day i set about taking off all the iconography using my new tool (xmas present from me to me!).  So to start this post off here is a couple of pictures of dark angel (DA) terminators minus the DA iconography.  Personally the standard terminator works for me not sure about the seargent the robes still make him look like a DA i think.  Particularly as im going to paint them white and green.  Any suggestions people??

So i stated above havent been able to do much!  Well i have done some....  Heres a couple more painted marines. 

 

 

So this guy is a DA from dark vengeance cleaned up as above and painted.  I will order up some Death Guard transfers from forgeworld when i get the chance or may have a go using a skull transfers and free hand!  I think this shows it can work cleaning up the dark vengeance DA's and using them as something else!

 

Secondly another chaos marine figure painted up apoligies this shot is a little blurred.  Sorry i only have an i-phone for photography!  (one day ill put that right!)  I painted this one to get a feel as to whether of not fitting chaos marines and space marines together would work??  To illustrate this i took a photo with all three together.

 

 Ok the bit where i ask do they work together or not??  My opinion is YES.  Put simply as i mentioned in the first post i cant afford forgeworld and im not good enough to convert everything so this is my compromise using a variation of model types.

 

Ive started 3 more... Some tips for painting white.  Finish painting the white armour last when washing try to get as little on the armour as possible it will save time later.  Several coats of heavily watered down white will give the crisp finish.  Lastly patience white is hard and unforgiving and im not the best painter in the world so you need to know when to leave it alone! 

Final picture is a sneak peak of some more in progress...  Well not really its a defiler claw.  I thought i need to know two more things will this work on a large scale model.  Secondly will the colour scheme work on the really chaosy stuff!

So it will be a few weeks before any more death guard comes out as it takes an age to paint them also as you will see from other posts ive got loads going on!  Lastly an appeal for genuine honest feedback; ultimately i put stuff on here to show others, help motivate myself with projects and also to improve my techniques.  Feedback can always help this.

Necron Triarch Stalker

Hi All,

Just before xmas i put the finishing touches to my triarch stalker and in the process learnt a clear lesson!

So firstly i hope you like the paint job im pretty happy and it matches up nicely with some of the previous work ive done.  This was my main concern with at least 6 months between this and the last time i painted crons.  Luckily (tip spoiler alert!) i had the foresight to make up two pots of the grey paint which is a self mix so i didnt have to remember how to make the colour!

So a clear lesson was mentioned in the intro...  So can you spot what is missing??

 

If you can then my error is clear, but if you can't then heres an explanation.  I decided in my infinite wisdom not to put the pilot in cockpit when i built the stalker thinking it would be easier to paint before puting him in.  Well it turns out yes it is easier to paint before putting it in but then i could not get him in the seat properly! Specifically the spine part which attaches to the machine in three separate places.  So after turning the air blue i simply gave up with that piece!!  So the moral of the story MEN of the world is follow the instructions!!  At minimum read them!

 

 

At the end of this cautionary tale i conclude this post.....

Merry Christmas

Here is my First fully painted bike squad

I just need to get a base for the Attack bike.

my review of the year.....GREAT!

2 strong showings at tournaments with my drop pods. Beating the all conquering ORK KAN army in the process.
Getting a lot of my back log of models painted (I can now see the end of my unpainted models)
6th edition. so much more FUN.

what will 2013 bring? well with the imminent release of the Dark Angel Codex that will be my first purchase.and some of their new fancy models. these will complement my Ravenwing and the DV models.

I will build a games board that is easy to store and move around.

I hope to go to the SVA and Carnage Tournaments in the early part of the year. and maybe some other events would be nice.

The numbers are increasing

I have at last managed to get a lot of my models build and under-coated. this has given me a solid base to get some serious painting done.

I bought the limited edition dark vengeance box set and here is the tactical squad from it:

and like Boss Bloodtoof (who steals all my good ideas) i am a big fan of drop pods. i have 7 at the moment and intend to build a full drop company. here is the 1st tactical squad and their drop pod transport.

and with DOC copying my tactics with his crafty bike purchases, this one is one of the Ravenwing that I converted to my chapters colour scheme.

not sure what to paint next, terminators more bikes or so Dark vengeance characters.

A New Hope

Hi All

I've been collecting and painting my space marine chapter, The Thunderbolts, for about 10 years now. In all that time I've amassed a lot of models, most of which are built but unpainted as I am continuosly flitting from one project to another. Several years ago I bought a drop pod army but never got round to getting it done, so I've played a variety of vehicle and infantry lists over the years with reasonable success but always in the back of mind was the idea that if only i had more pods built I could field that list I've always fancied. With next years tournaments just around the corner and  with the new rules in mind I've written a new version of the drop pod lists I want to try and have started painting the models I'll need to fill it.
First up is a new commander, a mighty hero of the chapter who will lead them to inummerable victories over the forces of darkness!! (or at least I hope so)
This will be my Chapter Master (counts as Pedro Kantor) enabling me to field the awesome Sternguard Veterans as scoring units, should be able to drop on or near an objective, clear it with Pedros help and their cool ammo options and then also move in and hold it. (best laid plans and so on....)
Anyways, more to come in later posts revealing my new list ideas, for now here are a few pics of the finished Chapter Master (yet to be named) counts as Pedro Kantor.
The banner is my second attempt at hand painted and I'm pleased with the result.

Pre Heresy Death Guard The Start

DOC back to 40K post...

So my last post i talked about playing SAGA for a change up from 40K.  So with the release of 40k 6th edition it drew me back in again.  The rules are the best set yet in my opinion.. and the rulebook is far easier to interpret.

So with money short at the moment, this new project started with the aim being how can you get the most use out of your models for your buck?  For years ive dabled with CSM but not really got the project off the ground.  I had been given a load of chaos stuff by Red Mist years ago but not got round to it.  It also seemed an appropriate project given the rumours (at the time) of the impending release of the new chaos codex. 

So the Code Crew went off to Games Day UK and extremeluko picked up the forgeworld book betrayal featuring the first pre heresy lists and primarchs.  I picked up Dark Vengeance  and it was if the penny had dropped at that moment.  Why not paint the core of the army so it could be used as a Space Marine Army, A CSM Army and be used as a Legion List from forgeworld. 

So i decided to paint some test models. I started off with the idea to have a go at a Word Bearer, Alpha Legionaire, Thosuand Son and Death Guard. All in pre heresy colours. I abandoned the Word Bearer and Alpha Legion guy early they were just not doing it for me. The other two i completed.
Obviously from the title i plumped for the Death Guard and the test model is shown below:

 

 

So now ive finnally decided its full speed ahead...  Both the Marines and CSM from DV will be painted in the same colour scheme.  The DA symbols will be all carfeully scraped away.  As cash is tight i will be stripping old models and re building them to paint for this Army.  Ebay will also be my best friend as i look to build this army towards SVA13 next year.  Some pics of my work desk:

Saga an Introduction

 

So where has Doc been??

Over the last two or three months i havent blogged but i also havent been idle.  Myself and Andy have discovered a new gaming club not too far from home at:

So we thought we would go along and have a look.  So to cut a long story short we really enjoyed the atmosphere, people and facilities.  For those in the Midlands UK i highly recommend it and have a look at the website above.

 

A lot of the guys at Wyvern play a game called SAGA an historical wargame.  We decided to give this a go and see what it would be like to play a new system.  What also made the game attractive was the skirmish scale and the realitively cheap access to the game. 

 

Having only played GW systems it was quite an eye opener using a completely new system.  The system uses an order phase to activate your units for a turn.  The most basic game also starts off with just 4 units ranging from 4 models to 12 models depending on the ability level of the unit.  If you would like to know more check out:

Having played one game we were hooked no exageration it was a breath of fresh air and such a nice change!  So i went for a starter scots warband which you can see pictured below.  To really pull us in to this new experience the club decided to run a SAGA day on the 15th September.  This gave me a target to paint to aswell something that always motivates me! 

 

So with a target in mind i set about my 4pt warband with the main aim of trying something different to my general darker affair i paint for 40K.  For the first time in some years i painted off a white undercoat and built up the base colours and let the washes do the shading followed by a highlight.  I also had fun with hand painted shield designs and some war paint!  Anyway please take a look below:

Paladins Finished...at last

Well at last i have finished my 20 Paladins. They were due to be ready for the 1st week in July, so only 4 months late!

BIKES

so these were purchased from Hyspaspist before he moved to Canada. i have always like the Ravenwing and i have been on the end of a beating or 2 from them in the past. i think that if i paint the white wings yellow then they should fit neatly into my army colour scheme.

and here is an example

i got 4 ravenwing boxes and 2 land speeder typhoons and a master of the ravenwing in a speeder. i also have 8 unbuilt bikes from my previous attempt to start a bike list, and also 6 unbuilt dark vengeance bikes and an unbuilt speeder. i have got another 8-10 bike and an attack bike in a bit of poor condition off eBay.
