Mechanicum - Thanatar Siege Automata Showcase

Mechanicum - Thanatar Siege Automata

After building the first of my Mechanicum force I thought it was about time I worked out a paint scheme. The Thanatar Siege Automata is an absolutely cracking miniature to paint. I really enjoyed this guy, especially some of the techniques. I'd not painted yellow armour before so I quite fancied giving it a go to see how difficult it was. To be honest its not the easiest and isn't very forgiving if you make any slips but it does let you get some great contrast of colours.

I've kept the colours really simple to try and give it a specific style. I airbrushed a Vallejo Black primer to start and then working up in gradual light coats from Charred Brown to Heavy Brown and finally with Golden Yellow. The Black Primer results in a muted flat yellow which is what I was after. Shading was done with Charred Brown airbrushed from underneath and I Pin washed all the cracks with Sepia Wash. I added some weathering/chipping to the armour which I was pleased with, it seems to show up nicely on yellow armour. I added the edge highlights with Lemon yellow. The only thing I'm a tad disappointed with was the metal parts which I found difficult to bring out more, other than drybrushing various steel/silver shades and washing with Nuln Oil, there wasn't much more I could think to do. I didn't want a heavily weathered metal look so kind of kept it simple. Having done Blue OSL before I fancied a change and thought the purple/pink plasma would compliment the yellow fairly well. I'm reasonably pleased with the outcome. All I need to do now is decide on a house for my mechanicum and get some transfers which I think would finish it off properly.
Anyway, hope you like, Any questions or C&C always welcome

  1. He looks awesome Luko well done, look forward to this expanding into an army. Also I think the base is mint that's how you use cork and not make it look like painted cork!

    1. Cheers dude, already started on the thallax, they're a bit smaller so I think the weathering will be tough to pull off but we'll give it a go πŸ‘πŸ»

  2. It's a lovely paint job and great detail in the weathering the plates but I think you should revisit a few details, the lenses on the right side below the head perhaps, the cog icon to the left of the head, should that not be half white, half black. The waist undercarriage with the bolts that is yellow, I think would benefit from being metallic? Perhaps even the riveted cowling around the head unit, perhaps that could be metallic too? Only suggestions to make it really pop and look less sprayed? The devil is in the detail.

I love the base and the unfortunate Marine legs! Ha Ha...

Great as is, really! Just minor tweaks I think it could benefit from perhaps. Of course, feel free to ignore me, ha ha. I wish I had half the talent to weather my armour like you!

    1. I do have a habit of missing things which is why I love the community. I will defo go back and hit those areas. I didn't even notice the lens but now I can't stop seeing themπŸ™ˆ As for the undercarriage I'm planning on some decals for that so I think that may sort it (break it up a bit than just another yellow plate). Really appreciate the feedback and the nice comments so thanks. I think I'll try and do a tutorial at some point on the chipping, it's actually easily achievable for anyone.

  4. Lookng good dude. Didn't get a good look at the open day. Love the transition from base into legs; nicely weathered. I agree with Siph regarding missing details. Trnsfers will make a vast difference tho. Nice job. 😁

  5. Top tip: Stick to golden yellow, never go medium yellow! (my most hated yellow color now).

Looks great. It's very hard to find just how to break up the yellow tones, and you've done it really nicely. I shall have to loot your airbrushing shades with some browns.
