Primaris Marines (and other stuff)

Happy New Year (better late than never)

First up a very quick review of 2107, I didn’t do much! Combined with house renovation and my wife going back to work after maternity leave, it didn’t leave me much time to do much.
First up I painted this Eldar Scorpion for my dads’ birthday

I have not really painted such big models before but it was pretty easy to put together and I tried a few different painting styles.

I really enjoyed doing it, so much so I have just had the Cobra delivered for his birthday this year!

Next up we had the release of 8th edition and the new Primaris marines. I am slight torn with these as they are stunning models and the right scale, but I feel this is the end for the “normal” space marine.  For these models I am starting a new colour scheme. The issue with my current scheme is that to paint black and yellow is hard and slow. It can easily look messy if not done right. I have taken this scheme from an ‘Eavy Metal painter’s personal army. He created the colour scheme to be easy to paint which I think it is.

The scheme is leadbealcher spray washed in a 50:50 mix of nuln oil matt and gloss. Then highlight with ironbreaker and runefang. I really enjoyed painting them and now all my new marine stuff will be primaris (expect where I still have stuff to paint).

Speaking of new stuff, here are some of the primaris characters I got for my birthday and Christmas

Chaplain

Apothecary

Librarian

… and one of the easy-build redemptors (currently WIP).

Gaming wise last year I had a few games. I managed to attend a local event and played the new 8th edition. I like this edition a lot and GW seem to be making a real effort in getting feedback from players on what work and what doesn’t.

Aims for 2018, things are settling down at home and I aim to do a lot more with the hobby. So far I have painted every day (abet sometimes only 10mins of so, but every little helps) and I have had 2 games of blood bowl (I love this game) and I will be having a game of 40k tonight!

One final thing is a new display case

Hopefully I get to post on here a lot more over this year too.

Imperial Fists - Heresy Era.........Jumping in at the deep end!

Hi All

Bluddtoof here with a post about my new project; Heresy Era Imperial Fists.
I've always fancied an Imperial Fists army, I'm a devout loyalist but never wanted a smurf army and even though I love Iron Hands I don't much like painting black.
However like a lot of people out there my experiments with yellow over the decades have proved less than successful so an entirely yellow army has always been quite daunting!

But then.......! A couple of months ago I saw a really nice post or two on FB by a dude (whose name I can't remember) with a fantastically simple but effective recipe for a weathered yellow. His IF look really nice and the recipe works on all scales of models. If you're the dude and you're reading this then a big shout out to you! Thanks for the advice.

So the recipe as I've used it is:

Spray base of Zandri Dust,
wash in recesses and around rivets etc with seraphim sepia,
wash entire surface/model in casandora yellow,
wash entire surface/model in lamentors yellow.
leave each coat to dry thoroughly of course....

..and that's it basically for all the yellow bits.

what you get is a kinda dirty mustard yellow which already looks nicely weathered and with all the lovely detail picked out and shading/highlights done.

I spent longer waiting for drying paint than I did painting. Easy!!

Then it's just a matter of picking out all the other bits that aren't yellow, bolters and vents and eyes etc. In all honesty that took longer on the models I've done so far than the yellow did.
And finally I want a real dirty and war torn look so I'll be going big on the weathering!

So I started the army with a Typhon, that's right I jumped straight in with a massive tank because I hadn't at that point got any 30k marines yet, apart from 2 missile dudes gifted by Doc. I do now and am working on those, but more on that later.

This was a pretty risky move for me, my first experiment with the scheme and some new techniques too and on a fairly irreplaceable model but hey ho I thought!

Here's the finished model...

..and the first two marines I've completed which were kindly donated by Doc.

These were my test pieces and will eventually be joined by another 8.
I decided to deviate from the official scheme cos I like to have a nice bright spot colour on all my stuff, you generally look at models from several feet away when they're in play so in my mind they need to jump out a bit. Si I scrapped the black detailing from the books and I've gone with a nice bright red on weapon casings and markings etc. I also had my first go with decal fix too, with mixed results, I'll keep experimenting. I used Humbrol's version here.

All in all I'm well pleased with the results. As you can no doubt see I've added to the basic weathering result of the yellow recipe by using sponge weathering to create chipping and then a liberal application of weathering powders to create dirt and soot streaking. The metal was weathered by washing with various browns and orange and dry brushing the edges with silver and then weathering powders to dull it back. The transfers are from the FW sheet and are really nice, you get loads too, a good purchase in my book.

This was also my first attempt at using weathering powders and I've got to say that it only took a little while to get the hang of dry application. I'd recommend the FW masterclass books; they too are a really worthwhile investment and I've used a few of the techniques shown in them.

I hope you like how this has started, I know I do, and as always C & C welcome.
Next up is a 10 man breacher squad, then hopefully a 20 man tactical squad.

Blood Bowl – TROLL!!! (and of course some Marines)

I have finished my Blow Bowl Troll.

I am very happy with him, and I think he holds up well to the new designs of the game. I went with suggestions and I did manage to get him on a 32mm base and he looks pretty good.

Next up for Blood Bowl are the 2 new referee models.

As usual I have been pointing more marines too (a lot on fact)

First up a Landspeeder Storm

Lovely model loads of detail. I have another one to do later in the year (when I need a Storm Bringer formation)

A storm needs some scouts to ride in it

Next up some character models, I have been a bit behind in getting the new plastic marine characters.

But here is the terminator captain

And this is the power armoured librarian with staff

Again lovely models and a pleasure to paint

I realised that my marines have very little in armoured support, so little that I could not field an Armoured Task Force formation! This has been corrected with anew vindicator

I also have a predator on the paint table!

To try them out I had a game at the weekend. I used the Anvil Strike force for my force organisation. It was a pretty brutal game and between us we only had 5 models left. On turn 5 I was winning but I just ran out of time and shots so by turn 7 I had lost! I got some pretty tough cards and some at the wrong time, but can’t blame them.

Finally a sneak preview of a WIP for my dad’s birthday present

It has been pinned and i am happy it holds together reasonably well without any glue. Below is the test colour scheme.

Once I have the base colours done and the model assembled then i will attempt to put some vine thorns on it.

Thanks me for the moment, until next time
