Scenery, Battles and yes more Marines

Another long absence from the hobby. Life is taking over my geeking pleasures. But now England have been dumped out of the World Cup i hopefully have a bit more time to spend "completing" the models I have.

First a battle. my first big game of 7th. I was playing against my brother and my dad. between them they could muster 3k of marines (minatours) and eldar. we ignored the allies matrix and a few of the min squad sizes and played with what they had. I took my marines with a detachment of grey knights and an inquisitor.

I took:

kantor with 9 sternguard (4 combi grav guns) in a pod
librarian with 9 sternguard (4 combi meltas) in a pod
tactical squad in a pod
10 scouts
10 assault marines
10 devators in a rhino
Stormtalon
Thunderfire

librarian with 10 grey knight terminators
eversor assassin
Inqisitor
retinue (2 servitors, 3 psykers, 2 deamon host, 2 arco)

Morloc with 5 TH/SS terms
10 assault marines with minotaur special chaplain
10 tact in rhino
10 tact
5 scouts
Special contempor
Stormtalon
Lib level 2 9 stern in pod
Farseer
10 guardian
Warlock 8 guardian (we know they are a minimum of 10)
6 scorpions
6 banshees
9 rangers
Ranger special character
5/6 dire avengers

Both were battle forged

We played the new missions where we had 3 per tern and they weren't secret.

Main points.
Psychic phase is harder to get power off. Yes they did go off and it is also harder to deny but nowhere near as “game breaking” as the doom sayers predicted.
I cast less than normal even with more psykers on the board!

Missions level the game a lot. You get the mission and then can complete them in your turn, before your opponent can react.
You need mobility. Scoring units are useful to trump things sat on an objective. E.g. if I have a thunderfire on an back objective and a necron warrior squad comes within 3” of it. The necron warrior squad can trump the thunderfire and claim the objective. But all units can get an objective which is a very interesting dynamic.

They game changed throughout and you need a bit of everything. At no point was there ever a hopeless situation for either player. Yes you may need a bit of luck with the objective cards, but there are 36 of them so luck is diluted a bit.

Final score was 8-8. Close throughout. I may have been able to nick it but needed a cast gate of infinity, which failed! and the assassin only consolidated 1 when needing 3+ to get to another objective!

some pictures:

No matter how good your tactics are.......

Kantor kicking ass, shortly before Morloc said hello!

I have nearly finished the scenery in my last post, but got side traced in completing the Sternguard squad for the battle.

i have sprayed up some craters and will quickly wash them and they will be ready for the baord.

model wise i am painting a witch hunter inquisitor and 2 more assassins.

I hope to get some more 7th ed games in over the summer.

Playing 40K a different way the Write Up

Hi All,

Welcome from myself (DOC) and Trevdog.. This is our second part on playing 40K the fluffy way.  So in order for you to understand what this is all about please first see part 1.  Below is Trevdog's write up of the battle we played over 8 turns.  It was just 287pts aside but boy was it a whole heap of fun and ended up with a cinematic climax.  Anyway without further ado onto the story:

Lighting up the road ahead, the two Space Marine bikes sped along Plaza Drive towards the east.  The dark silhouettes of buildings flashed past on either side.  They were in an area close to the Governor’s Palace that needed restoration or rebuilding altogether, but times were hard and poverty knocked on almost every door.  The roar of the bikes engines ripped through the morning silence.  Still keeping his eyes fixed on the road ahead and with occasional glances down to his mounted auspex, Torrinium voxed across to Bransk alongside, “Scans are negative Brother.  What say you?”

“All is quiet, it would appear” came the reply.

Unknowingly they had passed through a dampening field and a group of rebels of The Church lying in wait, shielded from their auspex scans.

Torrinium blink clicked the screen inside his helmet to change his vox channel, then announced, “Captain the route is clear, ready to proceed.”

“Acknowledged Torrinium.” Raising his voice to be heard over the noise inside the Rhino APC Captain Diritz spoke into the vox bead near his chin. “Split north and south when you reach Plaza Square. We are moving in.”

Captain Kearosen Diritz stood with his head tilted slightly to one side and touching the ceiling inside the Rhino’s passenger compartment.  Two more battle brothers from the 4th Company of the Emperor’s Eagles Chapter stood with him.  Another eight people sat along the sides of the compartment.  Five men sat to one side.  Four of them wore heavy green tunics or robes. Their faces were masked with black leather straps.  To look at them you would be mistaken to thinking they were a misfit bunch having crawled out from under a hive city.  They were in fact veterans of the PDF, the Governors own “Barator” Elite Guard.  Sat in the middle of them was a pale robed man under their protection.  He was Grandis Brinn, Liaison to Governor Shonai West.  From the look on his face he was not enjoying the ride.  Beads of sweat covered his brow.  Opposite was the Imperial Administrator, Prefect Patrinor with his two aids sat either side, Sympath I and Dedidex.  Sympath I was a plain looking woman with tired eyes and long auburn hair.  Her augmetics were concealed where in contrast Dedidex was almost more machine than man. He was in no position to care as his mind was controlled by Prefect Patrinor.  The Prefect was a large man in every way including his presence. This was not due to muscle bulk, rather to good food and drink of the finest quality.  As the Rhino increased to cruising speed Prefect Patrinor looked up at Kearosen Diritz, his steady gaze meeting the Captain’s, “What’s our status Captain?

“The streets are quiet Prefect.  My men have scanned the route.  This approach through the industrial district is the best and most direct at this time of morning.

Enforcer Irongate, leader of the rebels, stood with his back against the metal skin of the machinery housing on the far side away from the road.  He turned and spoke to Hooper Heat next to him, the words sounding metallic through the grill of his death mask. “You know what to do with that Meltagun boy”.

It was an order rather than a question.  “As soon as you hear the explosions triggered move and target the APC that’ll come along the street.”

Hooper didn’t say anything, but just nodded uneasily when he looked into the cold hard eyes behind the death mask.

Krackin had his sights trained on the Rhino as it came towards them up the street. It first passed under the gantry ahead and then the detonations sounded.

Huge chunks of masonry rained down ahead of the Rhino and behind it effectively blocking it in with the warehouse building and sewerage machinery either side. Krackin squeezed the trigger and the missile streaked down from the gantry to impact just in front of the APC. The explosion shook the vehicle and caused it to skid to a halt, the metal tracks ripping up the surface of the road.  Krakin’s expletive was drowned by the subsequent weapons fire from the hidden rebels.  Hooper swung around from the sewerage plant and fired the meltagun from the hip.  Intense heat built up in his weapon as the humming energy increased in pitch.  In an instant the beam of energy lanced toward the Rhino searing the front armour, but left Hooper slack jawed when he realized the vehicle had withstood the shot.

Irongate dashed past Hooper in a charge towards the stationery APC.  The first salvo of missiles and heavy stubber fire ceased.

Everyone inside the Rhino was thrown forwards and plunged into darkness for a second and then the dim secondary lighting came on with a flicker.  Captain Diritz and the two Marines remained standing.  Whilst the others were picking themselves up he turned to Grandis Brinn and the Elite Guard and shouted, “Out now! Prefect, follow me!”

The release bolts to the left and rear doors fired and the doors fell with a crash as they swung on their lower hinges to the ground.  Diritz was out first, filling the space between the Rhino and warehouse, bolt pistol leveled in front of him.  The other two marines, Berenito and Kol Lars exited quickly and immediately fired into the barricades to the front and rear.

The Barator Elite Guard came out from the rear of the Rhino and were met with returning small arms fire from solid shot stub guns. Travis, the lead Barator, yelled and fell as heavy stubber fire poured down from Stub Toes on the gantry to his left.  He felt little of the injury to his shoulder in his adrenalin fuelled state and started to pick himself up.  Nikaulus and Flex emptied their shotguns at the Undesirables behind the barricades, and Gavier sent a frag grenade from his launcher into their midst.  The Undesirables’ nerve broke and they fled from the barricade down the street.

Captain Diritz led Prefect Patrinor and his aids through a nearby door on his right into the adjacent warehouse.  Brothers Berenito and Kol Lars quickly following inside as slug shot pattered off their armour.  Suddenly from out of the shadows inside the warehouse came shots of stub round at them.  They flew past Captain Diritz and one embedded itself into the metal workings of Dedidex’s chest forcing him back a step.  Brother Berenito returned fire from behind the others and caught a Rabellion in the neck.  The explosive core bolt round removed the man’s head in a fountain of blood.  The other Rabellion next to him had already moved and was charging towards Diritz. The man snarled, chewing a cigar in the corner of his mouth as he pulled out a long bladed dagger from over his shoulder.  The glint of steel flashed up at the Captain’s face, but he casually flicked it away with his left forearm. Then grabbing Gravesend’s dagger arm he brought his own humming power axe in a swift arc into the top of the man’s skull splitting him clean in two.

Irongate ran across the open ground to the front of the Rhino.  He activated the Powerfist sheathing his right arm and punched with all his might through the armour of the APC.  The crackling power field around the ancient fist surged and distorted the metal around it.  Deeper he thrust into the mechanics of the vehicle until he struck the engine.  The powerfield ignited the fuel and Irongate felt himself thrown back through the air.  Consciousness left him the instant he hit the ground.

From the rear of the Rhino the blast caught the Barator Elite squad in the back and knocked them over like matchsticks in a gale.  Grandis Brinn took the brunt of the force as he stood on the ramp at the rear hatch to the Rhino.  His charred body landed in front of the group.  What little was left of his robes were still on fire.

Back inside the warehouse Sympath I shrieked and dodged to one side.  She had been looking out of an open window when a blur of fur on four powerful legs leapt in and pounced onto the back of Dedidex.  Huge jaws clamped around his neck as he was sent sprawling onto the floor.  The large hound released its grip on the poor aid and rolled quickly to right itself and turned.  With wild amber eyes and the sharp scraping sounds of its claws across the ferrocrete floor it hurled itself at Sythpath I.  Kol Lars quickly intervened by thrusting his arm in front of the woman into the jaws of the slavering beast.  The force of the impact from the leaping hound spun the Marine around and they landed in a heap on the floor.  While the hound kept its jaws firmly locked on his arm Kol Lars pulled his chainsword from the magnetized clip at his belt and activated the motor.  With a harsh buzz the teeth of the chainsword whirled and then with a stroke bit into the back of the beast spraying blood across the floor and himself.

Krakin and Fragin felt the heat from the blazing Rhino from below but continued to lay down suppressing fire on the PDF further away.  Shadow and Brothox who were on the gantry with them moved away and down the stairs into the warehouse. As they made their way down to the ground floor they saw a group of figures exit the warehouse on the far side.

Captain Diritz exited the warehouse with the two Marines bringing up the rear.  They had left Dedidex lying in a pool of his own blood.  Berenito had indicated that the aid had landed badly onto his face, the metal implants causing internal bleeding.  Prefect Patrinor had simply waved the group on to continue knowing time was crucial.  A group of men with two large hounds rounded the corner of the building ahead.  Kol Lars dropped to one knee and aimed down his sight.  His bolter fire joined with Berenito’s and exchanged with stinging stub rounds from the group in front of them.  Two of the men ahead went down and Captain Diritz shot the first hound between the eyes as the two animals bounded forwards.  The beast had already pounced at Diritz and its dead weight from the forward momentum still caught him square in the chest.  He turned with the force and flung the hound to the side.  The second hound was too quick for the Captain to deal with in time.  It streaked past and crashed into Sympath I before she could cry out.  It knocked her to the floor and savagely sank it’s fangs into her neck.  In that moment Diritz quickly stepped across and slew the beast with his power axe, but it was too late for Sympath I.  Slug shot pattered off his armour and he called for Prefect Patrinor to stand behind him for protection. Firing between the rebels and the marines soon stopped as the last of the rebel group went down.  Kol Lars and Berenito had advanced while they fired and were now standing over the bodies.

Irongate coughed and opened his eyes with a jolt. The sky was lighter now as morning cast the first rays of sun across the city.  He blinked against the brighter light and winced as he pushed himself up onto his elbows.  Grunting, he got up and moved slowly along the side of the wrecked Rhino in a crouch.  Flames licked from out the hatches and the large hole he had made earlier.  Smoke drifted across in front of him and a smile played across his lips, hidden by the mask he wore.  He looked up to see Stub Toes and the Aces High twins at their elevated positions reloading their weapons.

Then as the smoke parted he saw the green figures of the PDF at the barricade ahead and not his cohorts. They were quickly pumping cartridges into their shotguns as they sheltered under the gantry ahead and one of them held a grenade launcher that was aimed his way.  The hollow pop that signaled the discharge from the grenade launcher spurred Irongate into action. Turning about he half ran, half dived back around the front of the burning APC.  Shrapnel and dirt rained down on his back as he felt the concussive force of the detonation close behind him.  He lay there for a while, checking everything was in place then lifting his face off of the tarmac he raged at his men, “Bloody kill them damn you!”

As if brought to life, Stub Toes raised his heavy stubber and let rip towards the PDF group. Shots ricocheted against the gantry support struts forcing the men to flatten themselves against it.

“Frag this!” yelled Krakin as he loosed a missile towards the same group targeted by Stub Toes. The blast erupted around the men and one was hurled over the barricade like a rag doll.  The remaining three staggered out from cover and made a dash for safety to the warehouse door across the road.

Flex saw his friend Travis lifted into the air and over the barricade.  His hearing was shot, his mind numb from the loss of a friend he knew like family.  Nikaulus and Gavier got up and started to run.  He could see Nik mouthing something to him and waving his arm for Flex to follow.  He started to run too but before he could take more than two steps his legs were cut from under him.  He finally saw his friends make it to safety through the warehouse door.

Both bikers from the 4th Company arrived along the road.  Torrinium had doubled back to Plaza Square when he had heard the Captain on the open channel shouting out his orders to evacuate the Rhino.  Bransk had initially headed south, so cut west in a parallel line to Plaza Drive to bring himself around the far end of and then back along the same route the Rhino had travelled.  Bransk powered along the road and the wrecked Rhino soon came into view.  He saw figures on the gantry ahead and swerved instinctively to avoid any shots.  The missile they fired barreled down towards his last position and detonated out of harm’s way.  But he was then caught out as a second missile appearing from nowhere hit the ground in front of him which pitched his bike, front wheel first, into the air.  Bransk let go of the bike and slid along the road feet first on his back in a shower of sparks from his armour.

Torrinium, on the other hand, had turned back and approached more cautiously along the road from the opposite end.  Smoke obscured the Rhino and the road ahead.

In the warehouse, Shadow and Brothox continued to make their way down the stairs.  It was dim inside and as they got closer to the ground floor they could make out the forms of three human figures and a hound lying in pools of blood and gore.  Brothox spat, “That’s Mr Gravesend that is”, nodding his head in the general direction of the bodies.

“I know” replied Shadow quietly.  He quickly held his arm in front of Brothox to stay him.  Through the clamour of weapons fire outside footfalls and heavy breathing grew louder and two men in green robes ran into the warehouse just below them.  They skidded to a halt in front of the bodies and momentarily looked down at the carnage.  In unison Shadow and Brothox raised their rifles and fired.  The robed men danced awkwardly as the shells hit them, and finally fell to the ground like puppets cut from their strings.

“Brothers, let’s move on” Captain Diritz urged his men over the vox.  “ Plaza Square is on the other side of those buildings ahead”.  Kol Lars & Berenito were already familiar with the layout of the city streets having studied their roles in this mission meticulously.

“Yes sir!” was their reply.

Berenito took the lead and Kol Lars stayed to cover the rear of the group.  Prefect Patrinor now kept close to Captain Diritz having seen his aids fall quickly to the rebels.  Berenito moved along the warehouse wall to the corner and peered around cautiously.

“Ambush!” he cried out and swung round the corner of the building and out of view.  Immediately Kol Lars and Diritz sprung forward readying their weapons.  As they ran closer to the corner they could just see the back of Berenito ahead.  He was being assailed by a group of Rabellions who were pitched to a frenzy.  Slug shots and blades bounced off his armour as his chainsword drew arcs of crimson in the air.  In a matter of moments his assailants had all fallen around him bar one.  This last one fell to his knees and held a grenade in his outstretched hands in front of him.  It looked almost like he was offering it to Berenito as his hands shook.  Berenito’s chainsword made its last arc to decapitate the kneeling Rabellion as the grenade went off.  The detonation made Diritz and Kol Lars stagger back and bowled Patrinor over into the dirt.  Diritz turned to Patrinor and helped him up.

“Are you hurt?” he asked with genuine concern.

“No Captain”. Though visibly shaken he kept his voice level.  “I desire to stay alive for a few more years.  I take it you are up to the task of allowing me to see this through?” He brushed his hands down his clothes in a vain attempt to calm himself.

Diritz was taken aback somewhat and fought to stop his choler rise. “That is without question Prefect”.

Turning he glanced down at Berenito lying face up where he had fallen having taken the full blast to save his brothers. The armour plate on his chest was cracked and the golden Imperial Aquila was split in two with a line of red blood welling up to the surface.

“Leave him, his life sign is too weak to continue with us” Diritz said to Kol Lars.  So the three of them left and headed to the Basilica building across the road from them.

Bransk leaped back up onto his feet, from the forward momentum of his slide along the road, and started to run.  Ahead were two Rabellions behind a barricade below the gantry.  Bransk drew his bolt pistol and chainsword as he ran towards them.  They exchanged fire. The Rabellion’s shots went wide as he bore down on them.  The thunder of his charging footsteps shaking the ground and putting fear into their hearts.  His bolt pistol barked twice and the two men crumpled in front of him.  He vaulted the barricade and continued his charge along the road.

Torrinium’s attention was caught by the sound of the explosion.  He could see the figures of his Captain and another marine with the Prefect in the distance entering a building.  He steered his bike toward them and started to accelerate.  Then as the smoke cleared around the warehouse and gantries the rebels open fired upon him.  First, a frag missile from Krakin, streaked in and hit his bike, the blast toppling both over.  Torrinium found he was now pinned to the floor by the weight of the bike on his right leg.  Knowing he was in a vulnerable position he quickly set to work to prize himself free. With his left leg he started to push the bike.  Then a figure came into view above him, breathing heavily from running. The man pointed his gun at Torrinium and the rising whine of the energy build up signaled his doom.  The discharge of the Meltagun blew a clean hole through the seat of the bike and the prone marine behind.

Hooper heard Irongate call him and turned to see his leader running with Grimm, another Rabellion, towards the Basilica building.  Quickly checking the charge of his Meltagun he started off towards Irongate.

“We will cut them off at the other side of this Basilica”, shouted Irongate to his men. They ran around to the front of the building and into Plaza Square.  At the same time three figures emerged from the front doors.  Captain Diritz was leading them. Time seemed to slow down. Bullets whistled between the two groups and missed their targets in what appeared to be in slow streaks with vapour trailing behind.  The distance between them shortened with each heart beat and breath.  The two marines protecting the Administrator were giants, but that mattered little to Irongate.  His loathing of the Imperial cult was like a stimulant in his veins that gave strength to his body and inspired his men.  They followed him because he led by example and they feared him, but that was down to what was behind the mask and not the mask itself.

The distinct sound of a bolter round finding its target in the man next to him shattered the fuzzy bubble of the moment and raw noise of the melee erupted around him.  Grimm’s feet left the ground as the explosive core of the bolter shell ripped through his chest, leaving a huge exit hole in his back. Hooper saw Grimm crumple to the ground.  In the next breath Hooper saw the sun eclipsed by a giant of a man looming over him and the buzz of a chainsword swinging down towards him.

Irongate flew at Captain Diritz, his raised powerfist swinging overhead to pound the marine into the ground.  Diritz brought his power axe up to block but he couldn’t deflect the full force of the blow.  The powerfist grazed down the arm of the Captain forcing a grunt from his throat as pain flared up from his shoulder to his fingertips.  Irongate’s charge threw his own balance off and he stumbled into the Captain as his powerfist hit the ground.  In the next instant his opponent’s knee came up and connected with the Enforcer’s chest breaking his sternum.  Irongate felt a jolt of searing pain in his chest as he was pitched backwards onto the ground.  Each breath was painful and like a purifying fire at the same time.  Diritz felt his whole left arm go numb as it hung at his side. He stepped towards the man in the mask and lifted his axe up ready to finish him. With startling speed, the masked man sprung up and both started to circle each other.  Diritz cut a low sweep with his axe which Irongate parried at the last moment with his powerfist.  The energy fields of the two weapons repulsing each other in thunderous crackles and blinding white hot light. Both men were finding it hard to penetrate the defense of the other.  Diritz was of consummate martial skill and easily out maneuvered Irongate.  But, for his lack of skill Irongate was fuelled with hate.  This seemed to increase his speed and made the powerfist move through the air with frightening speed.  Diritz side stepped another swing from Irongate and immediately reposted with a kick.  Irongate managed to grab his opponent’s foot as it struck him and as he fell he brought his powerfist across to strike the exposed leg.  Diritz felt the powerfield shatter the bones in his leg but he remained standing.  This gave him the opening to strike with his axe.  The axe swept down and into the shoulder of the masked man.  The power of the stroke followed Irongate’s fall and then pinned him to the ground as it bit into the road.  Diritz toppled with him and went sprawling to the floor.  As he lay there he felt the stimulants administered by his armour stabilize his organs and central nervous system.  He had lost the feeling to both his arm and leg.  He was aware of his own voice commanding Kol Lars to take Patrinor to the Palace which was in sight across the square.  A while later he saw the masked man lying near him picked up and carried off by the man’s own troops.

They didn’t pay him any attention.  The must have known he was still dangerous even in his battered condition.

“Sir?” The familiar voice of Brother Bransk was close to his ear.  He had heard the marine approach across the square while in his recuperative state.

“I hear you Bransk.  What took you?” he smiled.

“The Rebels have gone.  I was going to pursue, but knew it best to check on my  Captain and brothers first.  Kol Lars has confirmed they are now safe inside the Palace.

“Good. Now contact Apothacary Jantolus and tell him he has work to do”.

Well that's all folks we are currently discussing where the story goes next and will no doubt publish that.  Please leave comments and thoughts on the story and this way of playing 40K?

SVA and Carnage Pt3

So this is it, my final review of the last few weekends, and now Carnage. Again this event is not a WAAC tournament, but a nice friendly arena to play lots off 40k games. The set up was 4 games at 1250 on the Saturday, followed by 3 at 1250+500 (1750) on the Sunday. The second list had to include the first list with no modifications.

So here are my lists:

1250

Master of the Forge
Dread with Assault Cannon in Pod
Dread with 2 Autocannons in Pod
Ironclad with Hammer and Heavy Flamer in Pod
Ironclad with Chanfist in Pod
Tactical squad, meltagun, multimelta, combi -melta and powerfist in Pod
10 scouts with sniper rifles and cloaks

+500

Tactical squad with Flamer and Missile launcher in Pod
Dread with Multimelta and heavy flamer in Pod
Dread with Lascannon and Missile Launcher

and here is a picture:
the only reason i took this list is that i like playing with Dreads, and I like Drop Pods. i was hoping to get 2-3
Wins and not get too blown away by any "power" lists.

Game 1: was against a 7 model grey knight list, Draigo, 2 Paladins, 2 Venerables, and 2 Dreads. unfortunately for this guy he only had 2 fist on his verneables that could hurt me and in the end even though I was locked in combat with paladins with a 2++ I eventually killed all his army apart from Draigo who was on 2 wounds. A good start.
Game 2: next up was a team England player. At the last Carnage I played him in my first ever competitive game and he just beat me. Looking back at the list I took then no wonder! again I was not too hopeful as he had brought a fully tooled up Space wolves list; Logan, Wolf guard some with terminator armour, 2 lone wolves, long fangs and 2 grey wolf squads. This was 5 objective and spear head. The idea was to drop in and take out the grey wolves and use my pods to hold him back. I was aiming for a draw. In the end my plan failed due to poor shooting when required I only just got beat. If I had noticed the time then on my last turn instead of shooting the scouts I could have moved them on to my objective and sneak a 1-1 draw but I didn't and lost 1-0...close
Game 3: daemons...I have never like playing these and it was a diagonal setup and capture and control. I held my scouts in reserve ready to outflank as the objectives were close to each board edge. I maybe could have got a win if I had been a bit more daring, but I played safe and backed up my scouts on an objective and got a draw.
Game 4: Space marines which had a little bit of everything...but by the end not much of anything. All he had left was a stubborn scout who would not die, despite all the shots on him and an immobilised vindicator. A strong win
So at the end of day 1 I was 2-1-1, and was more than happy. One more good game tomorrow and I would have the result I wanted.
Game 5: Necrons. His list was mainly all the older models and he didn't have any of the new stuff, but having played against this type of list recently I knew what to do. It was capture and control, pitched battle. He set up 3 squads near his objective and played very defensive all game. My scouts got wiped out by his scarabs on turn 1, so 4 dreads had to drop in and deal with them straight away. One of my tacts dropped on my objective and sat there; while an ironclad and another dropped near his on the last turn I was able to contest his and won!
Game 6: Space wolves, kill points dawn of war. The worst combination for my list and against another elite space wolf list. There was not much I could do or play differently and got tonked 9-4 in KP.
Game 7: Space Marines, terminators Kantor but only 2-5 man tact squads. My first turn I was able to pop a razorback and a landraider, but again attrition took its toll and I was unable to bring enough firepower to kill things quickly. Luckily he also had heavy losses and he only had left Kantor while I had a scout squad on an objective. Another win!
Final score was 4-1-2, 140 ish points and 6th position.
Over all the squad of the weekend were the scouts. Other than 1 bad game they were brilliant; causing pinning checks and even the odd glance or 2 on light vehicles. The list was surprisingly solid but did come unstuck at times against top tier list. I got beat in game 2 by the winner, beaten by 4th place and drew with 5th. Would I have done better with my dual raider Vulkan list? Who knows but I doubt I would have has as much fun.

SVA and Carnage pt2

As mentioned in Hypa's post we got split up in to good guys and bad guys. No one wanted to take the mantle so I step forward in a brave and forceful manner and picked it up! I then found out that Hypa had won his first battle and he too was a force commander. We agreed that last game tomorrow we would face each other in the APOC game.

My first game was Planetstrike defender for me. I also took up the good guy’s secret mission, which was at the end of the game have the highest placed model on the battle field. The battle was mainly decide on poor dice rolling on Docs part at crucial time. His destroyer lord had a total of 7 attacks (all of which hit) against Lysander, but only managed to force 2 saves. By the end of the battle the Necrons were completely destroyed and I claimed a total of 18 campaign points. Round 1 finished well for the good guys as we were 88-80 up. As we had such a good round I decided to spend some of the CP's on hired help. Just because we used them in the low point game doesn't make us sneaky! We just did a bit more finking than or orky friends.

Next up I played a battle mission 1750. I was launching a surprise attack on some chaos marines and was able to drop in all my pods on turn 1! Wow I thought this helps me greatly and he had to set up everything within 12" of the centre. So I dropped in and my sternguard caused 14W on his daemon prince and he died. The 2 tactical squad’s meltas some rhino transport and my ironclads were to melta the land raider and then assault out of their Lucius Pattern pods into the contents of the raider which was zerkers and a lord....easy....or so I thought. First melta missed and the second failed to pen. But not to worry as I could still assault it.... first dread immobilised itself coming from the pod, but the second hit home and ripped apart the raider. Not a bad first turn. Things still went well for me in the second turn as he could only kill a few marines and my mobile ironclad while I wiped out his obliterators and got Lysander close to his berzerkers. After this things just never seemed to work. And I lost by a single kill point! A lot of people who had seen the first turn were shocked that I lost and that was the same for both me and my opponent. I still managed to pick up some valuable campaign points but the rest f the good guys started to take a bit of a beating.

3rd game for me was another battle mission with a middle objective. I was up against a Tyrants List from the Badab War apoc books. This mission required me to defend the middle and him to capture it. By turn 3 I had engaged 1 tact squad with an ironclad, the guard squad was being whittled down by Lysander and the other tact was miles away from the objective. I was heading for a draw by turn 5 when he realised he needed to get his tact squad on an objective. Luckily for him the game went to turn 7 and I could not engage the squad and with all his run he just (it needed a careful measurement) got to within 3" of the objective. Again I picked up a few campaign points

The rest of the good guys had performed just as bad and by the end of the first day we were way behind the bad guys.

We had to go for it on Sunday so as leader I said I would do a planet strike attack. I was up against a tau list. Now while I won this game and got max campaign points it was no way an easy game. My one of my ironclads was in combat from turn 1 against broadsides then crisis suits and with a total of 27 attacks only killed some broadsides! It was terrible. I only had 4 models left at the end of the game, but I was touching all 3 bastions.

Finally the big game.... commander V commander. I was a little worried as his Kan list was still unbeaten in all its games, did I have enough to take out all those Kans????  We both had the secret mission of kill the other
Commander model. The set up was 1 superheavy or 3 normal unit. Hypa chose to put down his stompa and I put my warhound as far away from it as possible. His first turn took out my void shield and damaged my drive train... so my 2 ironclads dropped in next to the stompa and shot the melta at it taking off a structure point. Then my warhound opened up with its turbo laser destructor.....2*D hits...rolled a 5 and a 6, then another 6 and KABOOM! The stompa was left a pile of bits. From that point on I was able to take down his Kans, but I mada an honourable agreement that I would not shoot Stompnuts but he had to try and shokk attack my warhound each turn. On the last turn he sucked himself in to the warp and he had nothing left. All the orks had killed was an ironclad and 4 marines (1 of the marines had killed himself in the blast radius of a popped Kan)

But alas my heroics were to no avail and the good guys were beaten 375-425. I finished 2nd overall with victory points and I was the top scorer of campaign points.

Another great weekend arranged by the spikey club guys.

SVA XII - A Mek's Perspective, Part I

Good Morning Code Fans :)

Well as Doc said, SVA was yet again a cracking weekend, and thanks as always go to the Spiky Club (and in particular Ben) for another great campaign weekend. To anyone who has never been before, get your name down next time, it's a shoe in for fun!

so... onto the highlights of the weekend.

Unlike the last two previous years, where the 'good guys' and 'bad guys' were split off into teams of four within eachcampaign team, this year it was simply a straight up two sided affair. This required a LordCOmmander for the Good Guys, and a Lord Commander for the Bad Guys.
Naturally, the So-Called Goodies had some sort of democratic voting system whereby a commander was elected (although, frommy understanding, it was more a case of every other good guy taking a step back, leaving Toonboy standing front and Centre!)

The Bad guys 'Did it Proper!' Dan from Team Hate and myself both had designs on the Lord Commander position, and what better way to resolve it in the 30 minute 'planning period' than by having a Super-Heavy-Off, Stompa Vs Chaos Warhound.

The two would-be Generals got straight down to it and fire arced across the battlefield as glorious shouts of bloodlust rang out....

(meanwhile... several members on the side of disorder were dishing out missions in fear that the 'generals' would spend so much time pummeling each other that there would be no planning time left.... how RIGHT they were!) :)

Finally, after many rockets, Turbo Laser Destructors, and general mayhem (and to my very great surprise) Da Supa-Dakka Beakie-Smasha was Triumphant over the Glory of Woe, and so it came to be that The Code were in control of BOTH sides for the weekend!

and so onto the games!

Game 1 - Big Mek Stompnutz Tankmob vs Alex Walker's Space Wolves.

Well firstly, what a thoroughly nice Chap... easily one of my favourite opponents of all time. (And his army contained lots of old school models as well, which is always nice to see!)

The mission was... well I didn't really read it that hard, Iwas just intent on having a blast!

Here is how the game looked after ourDeployments and his Turn 1...
Bjorn the Fell Handed lead the charge and there was an awful lot of Carnage... to cut a long story short, Alex won 10 Kill Points to 6, and a thoroughly deserved Victory it was too! I had fun with my Grot Tanks, they weren't, to be fair, super effective, however they were fun, they shot loads, and amazingly difficult to kill!

Perhaps taking a lead from their Commander, the Forces of Disorder and not had a good first turn, and were slightly behind the Forces of Order...
That was until the Order Quartermaster spent as many points as possible and the Good Guys put a load of mercenaries into bat (and they started round 2 on less points that the bad guys.... a turning point?!)

Particularly of note here was the underhanded use of an Inquisitor and his retinue being added to a good guys Kill Team by the Forces of Order, effectively turning a 400 vs 400 into a 520 vs 400 shoot fest... More on this later!

Game 2 - Hypaspist Vs Darth Darlow - Apocalypse. the return of the Stompa!!!

Without a Super Heavy, it was looking serious for the Inquisitor, however I seriously underestimated the Vindicare Assassin, and after two Turns of my Stompa wreaking absolute havoc, the Vindicare got a shot in on the big boy...

...he Hit

...He Penetrated...

...He got a Chain reaction....

...He got another Chain Reaction....

....and took off the last structure point....

...and then the Stompa blew up, taking two more kill kans down, immobilising a Deff Dread, and ripping the close combat weapons from another two Killa Kans...

All of a sudden, the tide had turned!

the rest of the game involved trying to Batter as many inquisitorial forces as possible and prevent them getting the objectives, Whilst Darth valiantly tried to Ground my remaining walkers.

In the end, a last turn objective grab sealed the win for the Bad Guys, but it was a very close run thing and I had the feeling I had got away with an undeserved victory (losing a stompa in a 2000 point game is quite the blow!)

...and what happened, I hear you ask, in the imbalanced Kill team game?

...Not satisfied with being outnumbered and outgunned already, Doc decided to forget to deploy 4 of his models, making an already difficult challenge much more difficult.

Nevertheless the Binary transmission came in at the end of the Round that the Necrons had managed an astonishing against-the-odds victory!

and the Forces of Disorder were beginning to pull away...

Next time, we'll see Turn 3, 4 and 5 and what happens when a dreadmob Defends a Planetstrike mission, and the Lord Commanders clash, the painting competition results, and a full picture of the Dreadmob in all it's glory...

For now However, I shall leave you (as it's time to get to Carnage!) with my planetstrike deployment...

SVAX The Results Part Deux

Hi All,

As promised ill talk about game 2 from my SVAX weekend....

Game 2 Capture and Control
My Wolves VS Eldar (Larry a fine chap hailing from New Zealand)

As continued the theme this weekend Larry's Eldar were another beautifully painted army and nominated for the best painted award along with my first opponent.

As stated before my camera isn't the best but you can still get the idea how nice the eldar looked!

So the first thing Larry did is ask me if i wanted a drink so off we trundled to the bar. Thanks very much. The game itself was typical game against the eldar. One word describes it cagey. We, as always in capture and control had two objectives one in each deployment zone, but the boys from spikey had placed an additional bonus objective on the board. So unusually in an objective game i went first i placed my objective near the bonus objective giving me one point to defend instead of two and making it harder for my opponent. This defensive point was also in a building. So from this solid base i set out to try and attack Larry's objective which as it became apparent was difficult with the eldar popping around my flanks and shooting at the vinidacators side armour. The other problem which we didnt realise until it was too late is we played slow. Larry was a top guy and we got distracted talking all things 40K.

As we got to turn 3 as is usual in a capture and control we had Mexican stand off that is... until I got a good round of shooting off against the guardians and war walkers holding his objective removing most of these squads i sent in the fenrisian wolves (which all weekend long caught people out with how quick they move). This cleared his objective meaning i was now a winning position.

In to turn 4 (the last turn as we were slow) and i was undone by the classic eldar move meaning the eldar swooped the Jetbikes in and contested my objective making it a draw! Well as you noticed above i chose to go first which is unusual in an objective game and i nearly beat the eldar. As we always say, "just 1 more turn!"

The bonus objective was mine however, as there was no contesting on these objectives simply closest model claims it and i had surrounded it! This gained my team money to spend on upgrades for the forthcoming game.

Hope you enjoyed my Report?
