Ho Ho Ho Heresy - Alpha Legion

I'm an odd one.....no really. I love Space marines and the Heresy Stories, but oddly I don't like the older marks of armour. Due to this I have not bought any of the Heresy legions. I am a big fan of the Character series of models but I don't think my painting is up to scratch to paint these great, and expensive models (it is the same reason I have not delved in to the new Age of Sigma stuff either).

My brother however has got great painting skills (I got the looks...) and likes to paint these great models. So I have been buying them and sending them to him for painting. This first post is a little taster of what he can do.

His (and mine) favourite legion is the Alpha Legion. We both think they are not "chaos marines" in the normal sense but more like normal marines.

First up is a Contemptor Dread.

Next up is the Forgeworld open day Model

This is the first of a few posts of his heresy models. Come back for more later.

Ho Ho Ho Horus Heresy - Pre Heresy Death Guard, Back to the start again now go....

Hi All,

So as I said in the launch post I will be focussing in on my Death Guard.  I have already had 3 or 4 false starts on this army and I still don't have the paint scheme down in particular and it keeps evolving as techniques, equipment and the amount of time I have changes.

So thinking we aim to play our first heresy game the first thing is to try and get a use-able force i reckon.  At this stage I have Typhon built, a couple of praetors, 5 death shrouds, 1 fully painted mortis pattern contemptor dread and a load of infantry a various stages.

First thing I think I need lots of infantry that's how I envisage death guard.   I already had some built, a few painted and so on.  However, with the introduction of 32m bases I think marines look so much better on these size bases so I decided as my starter to this years work I would re base what I have onto 32m's.  I also decided to base my rapier to match it all together.

A few pics....

So this is my progress thus far.  You can see a couple of painted models within this collection. However, the method I have used to paint the models so far is really slow and time consuming.  With the purchase of an air brush I intend to try a couple of alternative methods to see if I can speed up the process.

The two methods I am going to try are:

Primer,
Wash recesses
White
Details and other colours
Decals
Weather

or

Primer
White
Wash recesses
(probably need white again)
Details and other colours
Decals
Weather

I will have to wait and see how this compares and whether or not this cuts down the three or 4 coats of white I was doing by hand.  The critical stage is the recess wash if I can be tidy with it less additional stages will be needed. Any thoughts people of the tinternet or code folk?

Remember all its HO HO HO Horus Heresy this Christmas...

Thats all for now folks

Announcing Code40K's third annual December event HO HO HO HORUS HERESY 2015

Hi All,

Welcome to announcement post for Code40k's third December event.  For the last two years we have run an event in December to help motivate us all to get stuff painted.  Two years we ran the Dread-Full December event.  The final post is here if you are interested in seeing some great painted dreads.

Last year we ran forgemas an event aimed at getting us painting various forgeworld stuff we own. This year we have decided to go for Ho Ho Ho Horus Heresy.  Well the title gives it away needless to say most of the code40k line up have bought stuff to play Horus Heresy only after a couple of years adult life has really prevented it!

So for this years December event we decided to focus in on Horus Heresy.  So watch out for various building and painting posts on heresy over the coming month.  At the end of the month I will post up the completed projects and we can all vote for our favourite.

I have already began the process with some deathguard and will share my progress soon.

Happy December all and Code40k guys get going lol!

Cheers

Review of the year....and obviously more marines

I’m going to discuss a little about my hobby experiences throughout the year.

Gaming: this year I have managed to play 12 games. I don’t think that 1 a month is too bad. I would like to play more, but I am not interested in playing at my local clubs and my usual local gamers like myself have very busy “normal” lives, so I don’t see this amount of games increasing next year.
I have now started to move house to a larger place. Hopefully in the course of the next few years I will be able to create a geek palace which allows me to have space for a permanent gaming area. My new place should offer slightly more space for my models but I think it is initially unlikely that they will have permanent place.
Painting/modelling: this year I have been pretty productive. I have managed to paint a range of squads and paint some of my terrain. I have been a member of a forums tale of painting which has focused me on painting at least 1 unit a month.
I have a set monthly budget for models and this year I have stuck to it well.  I have purchased most of the stuff I want to with only a few odds and sods not yet purchased (new data cards for scars and raven guard). I tried to do a log like doc where painting models unlocks money for new ones. Using a pretty similar scoring system to him I only managed to paint 50% of the money I spent. Maybe I should just double the points for each model painted!
This year I have done 2 new things, I have started my first knight and painted from scratch a large marine vehicle (Stormraven). Both of these are great models and I feel more comfortable painting them now.
Anyway here are some pics:

Looking ahead to 2016. Hopefully I can clear my back log of models. I did a reasonable job this year and managed to clear 30-40% of stuff I had at the beginning of 2015. I need to go back and tidy up my battle company with correct shoulder pad markings and chapter insignia. This may take a bit of time but I think it will be worth doing.

I’ll sign off now as I need to prepare for the Code's special December treat for you all.
